Market closes higher as Fed rate hike concerns ease

Nifty 50 closed at 23,897.70 (24.3, 0.1%), BSE Sensex closed at 76,515.43 (362.6, 0.5%) while the broader Nifty 500 closed at 23,254.15 (0.1, 0%). Market breadth is in the green. Of the 2,827 stocks traded today, 1,499 showed gains, and 1,277 showed losses.

Indian indices closed higher, snapping a four-session losing streak as easing expectations of a US Federal Reserve rate hike lifted investor sentiment. The Indian volatility index, Nifty VIX, fell 5.8% and closed at 10.7 points. ESDS Software Solution's shares made their debut on the bourses at a 76.5% premium to the issue price of Rs 429. The Rs 720 crore IPO received bids for 135.9 times the total shares on offer.

Nifty Smallcap 100 closed higher, while Nifty Midcap 100 closed lower. S&P BSE SME IPO and Nifty REITs & Realty are among the top index gainers today. According to Trendlyne’s sector dashboard, Telecommunications Equipment emerged as the best-performing sector of the day, with a rise of 4%.

Asian markets closed mixed. European markets traded with varied trends. US index futures traded flat. Investors await the US non-farm payrolls data for August, due later today, for cues on the labour market and the Fed’s September policy move. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil prices stayed near six-week highs as the unresolved US-Iran conflict kept Middle East supply risks in focus.

  • Money Flow Index (MFI) indicates that stocks like Welspun Corp and Urban Co are in the overbought zone.

  • PC Jeweller soars over 10% as it repays debt to one bank, with plans to repay all outstanding debt this month. The company almost halved total debt during FY26 and has repaid 96% of its outstanding debt to the remaining five banks.

  • Raghav Productivity Enhancers touches its all-time high of Rs 1,943.7 per share as it enters an agreement to form a joint venture (JV) with TRL Krosaki Refractories to set up a silica ramming manufacturing unit in Odisha.

  • WeWork India Management is rising sharply as its board of directors approves setting up a 10 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar power plant in Karnataka to reduce electricity costs.

  • Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal warns automobile companies against claiming indigenisation by routing imports through Indian entities with minimal value addition. The government is monitoring company-wise import-export data and Import Export Code (IEC) numbers to map supply chains and assess the actual level of local value addition.

  • Tata Chemicals is falling as Kenyan President William Ruto reportedly directs its subsidiary, Tata Chemicals Magadi, to cease operations in the country. Ruto claims that the company has not done enough to develop downstream industries, create jobs or build infrastructure. This comes after the Kenyan Government ordered Tata Chemicals to suspend mining operations and soda ash exports.

  • Physicswallah is rising sharply as Motilal Oswal initiates coverage on the stock with a 'Buy' call and a target price of Rs 200 per share. This indicates a potential upside of 55.9%. The brokerage believes that the company is one of India’s most capital-efficient education platforms, supported by a low-cost customer-acquisition model, affordable courses and expanding online and offline presence.

  • Angel One surges as its client base grows 17.8% YoY to ~4 crore in August. Its average client funding book increases 40.2%. However, average daily orders decline 9.8%, indicating weaker trading activity despite the larger customer base.

  • United Breweries MD & CEO Vivek Gupta highlights strong premiumisation in India’s beer market, with premium gross margins expanding by over 1,000 bps and becoming margin-accretive in 60% of markets. He targets double-digit net sales growth and aims to raise premium beer’s revenue share from 10–11% to 20%, supported by strong repeat purchases of Kingfisher Smooth.

  • Capital market stocks like Angel One, BSE and Billionbrains Garage Ventures (Groww) are rising sharply as the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) reportedly plans to review the methodology used to determine settlement prices for derivative contracts following the rollout of the Closing Auction Session.

  • Priority Jewels' shares debut on the bourses at a 15% premium to the issue price of Rs 200. The Rs 91.5 crore IPO received bids for 100.5 times the total shares on offer.

  • Ceigall India secures an LoI from REC Power Development and Consultancy for a ~Rs 5,300 crore transmission project in Gujarat, involving a 765/400 kV AIS substation and ~300 km of transmission lines. CMD Ramneek Sehgal says the project will generate annuity income for 35 years and could help the company exceed its FY27 revenue and 15% topline growth guidance.

  • Gland Pharma is rising as 75 lakh shares (~4.5% stake), worth approximately Rs 2,121 crore, reportedly change hands in a block deal. Promoter Fosun Pharma is likely the seller in the transaction.

  • Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions rises as DSDG Holding APS sells 16.3 lakh shares worth Rs 199.3 crore through a block deal at an average price of Rs 1,220 per share. SBI Life Insurance Co, Mahindra Manulife Mutual Fund and Whiteoak Capital Mutual Fund, among others, pick up the shares.

  • Iraq’s oil exports rise sharply in August and September, driven by steep discounts on its crude and Iran approving more tanker passages. China and India are among the key buyers taking more heavy crude. Vortexa and Kpler estimate August exports at 2.3 million bpd and 2.17 million bpd, respectively, up from July but still below February’s pre-war level of 3.4-3.7 million bpd.

  • Avalon Technologies is rising as it signs an agreement to form a 51:49 joint venture (JV) with Zollner Elektronik AG to jointly develop printed circuit board assembly (PCBA), box-build and system integration in India.

  • Rail Vikas Nigam is rising as it emerges as the preferred bidder for a Rs 404.9 crore order from East Coast Railway for an infrastructure project for a third railway line between Khurda Road and Gangadharpur.

  • Nifty 50 was trading at 23,927.20 (53.8, 0.2%), BSE Sensex was trading at 76,657.02 (504.2, 0.7%), while the broader Nifty 500 was trading at 23,299.20 (45.2, 0.2%).

  • Market breadth is overwhelmingly positive. Of the 2,236 stocks traded today, 1,508 were in the positive territory and 660 were negative.

Largecap and midcap losers today include Polycab India Ltd. (8,300, -5.8%), Havells India Ltd. (1,154, -3.8%) and SRF Ltd. (2,547, -2.7%).
