    Markets close flat, Hikal jumps on Covid treatment API

    Markets closed flat today, with the markets recovering losses towards the end of the trading session. Nifty 50 closed at 9128.95 (-13.8, -0.2%) , BSE Sensex closed at 31097.73 (-25.2, -0.1%) while the broader Nifty 500 closed at 7497.60 (-17.0, -0.2%)

    Market breadth is in the red. Of the 1611 stocks traded today, 707 showed gains, and 806 showed losses.



    Hikal hit the upper circuit in share price today after announcing the successful development of Favipiravir active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and its intermediates. 


    Shoojit Sircar‘s Gulabo Sitabo starring Amitabh Bachchan has become the first Bollywood film to be released outside theatres on a streaming platform (Amazon prime) in the post COVID19 period, inviting criticism from Inox Leisure, which stated "extreme displeasure and disappointment" with the move. The company described producers moving to streaming as "fair weather friends".


    Biocon is lower today on weak quarterly results, with profits falling over 34% YoY due to what the company called a 'one time Covid impact'. See the full results dashboard.

    Indian markets closed lower today. Nifty 50 closed at 9142.75 (-240.8, -2.6%) , BSE Sensex closed at 31122.89 (-885.7, -2.8%) while the broader Nifty 500 closed at 7514.55 (-152.5, -2.0%).     United Spirits, Jubilant Life, AU Small Finance among top gainers in the afternoon.


    Brent crude oil prices have seen a recovery in recent days as producers commit to production cuts and as lockdowns end in some economies, trading at over $30 per barrel. 


    The absence of detail in the stimulus announcement yesterday is bothering markets, according to analysts. Markets are lower today ahead of FM's press meet, but the government will be under pressure to enumerate how the measures lead to a 20 lakh crore package for the economy.

    • The government's focus on providing a stimulus mainly through credit guarantee schemes has protected it from raising the fiscal deficit, since these loans wouldn't materially impact its fiscal burden this year. While this would help businesses stay afloat, an absence of cash stimulus for households would keep demand down. An early reopening, if its on the cards this month, may contribute to the economy recovering. 

    • Reliance Capital CFO Vaibhav Kabra has stepped down. 

    • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced collateral-free loans worth Rs 3 lakh crore for approximately 45 lakh MSMEs with turnover up to Rs 100 crore, as part of the Rs 20 lakh crore stimulus package the government has announced.

    • The Indian government has also announced a Rs 45,000 crore liquidity infusion through a Partial Credit Guarantee Scheme 2.0 for NBFCs.

    • Markets rode the stimulus announcement to end higher today. Nifty 50 closed at 9383.25 (186.7, 2.0%) , BSE Sensex closed at 32008.61 (637.5, 2.0%) while the broader Nifty 500 closed at 7668.25 (147.4, 2.0%)

    Market breadth is highly positive. Of the 1614 stocks traded today, 1188 were in the positive territory and 363 were negative.

    • Apollo Tricoat Promoters have acquired 5.85% of additional shares in the firm through an SAST transaction. This is the second large purchase of shares in the company this week. 

    • Kotak Mahindra Bank has reported a 4.24% decline in consolidated net profit YoY for the March quarter. The bank has reported Covid-19-related general provisions of Rs 650 crore for the quarter, higher than that required by RBI to manage virus related disruptions in payments. 

    • Biotech firm Syngene International has announced Q4 results showing 17% YoY revenue growth and 20.1% net profit growth YoY. 

    • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will be addressing a press conference at 4 pm today, is expected to give greater detail on the planned economic stimulus. 

    • Cipla and Jubilant Life are up on signing agreements with Gilead to distribute Remdesivir, a drug that has seen promising results for treatment of COVID19. The USFDA granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for remdesivir to treat Covid-19, despite questions being raised on limited trial data to prove safety and efficacy of Remdesivir.

    • Markets are up today morning, as investors react to Prime Minister Modi's relief package announcement yesterday. Nifty 50 was trading at 9418.10 (221.6, 2.4%) , BSE Sensex was trading at 32185.90 (814.8, 2.6%) while the broader Nifty 500 was trading at 7686.05 (165.2, 2.2%). Market breadth is surging up. Of the 1447 stocks traded today, 1174 showed gains, and 213 showed losses.

    • The rescue package announced by Prime Minister Modi will trigget a big rally in markets, analysts say. Markets are predicted to see a strong open. The Rs. 20 lakh crore relief package, amounting to 10% of India's GDP, is significantly higher than what was expected.

    • Vedanta, in a stock exchange filing, has announced a decision to delist from stock exchanges, offering shareholders Rs. 87.5/share.

    LIVE: Markets close flat, Godrej Agrovet sees profit decline in Q4

    Godrej Agrovet showed revenue growth for Q4FY20 of 21.1% YoY, but net profit declined over 40% in the quarter.


    Analysts remain largely cautious on the jump in prices of auto stocks. While some companies have indicated sales, the slump is likely to extend into the next several quarters with lockdowns in red zones, limits on travel and low demand. 


    Markets made early gains but ended flat today. Nifty 50 closed at 9247.20 (-4.3, -0.1%) , BSE Sensex closed at 31561.22 (-81.5, -0.3%) while the broader Nifty 500 closed at 7561.15 (9.2, 0.1%). Market breadth is even. Of the 1634 stocks traded today, 763 showed gains, and 783 showed losses.


    Auto and metal stocks have dominated the Nifty50 gainers in stock markets today.
