LIVE: Markets close lower, banking stocks decline

Markets closed on a low note. Nifty 50 closed at 11367.35 (-107.1, -0.9%) , BSE Sensex closed at 38305.41 (-361.9, -0.9%) while the broader Nifty 500 closed at 9243.30 (-97.6, -1.0%). Worries about more debt defaults weighed on banking stocks, which fell sharply. CRISIL noted that companies are seeing weakness in the first half of FY2020, due to weaker demand and investment environment domestically and in global markets.

Market breadth is moving down. Of the 1648 stocks traded today, 351 showed gains, and 1215 showed losses.
