Chart of the week - IndiGo's market share increases during lockdown

India's leading passenger airline IndiGo Airlines' (operated by InterGlobe Aviation) market share in the domestic passenger airline market increased during the months when state governments imposed lockdowns. In May 2021, IndiGo carried 11.7 lakh passengers, 55.2% of total passengers flown. This is a 170 basis points increase from its market share in March. IndiGo's listed competitor SpiceJet's market share dropped to 9.4% in May from 12.8% in March, before lockdowns were imposed. 

The other leading airlines - Go Air, Vistara, and Air India, all saw a decrease in market share during lockdown months. IndiGo has a fleet size of 280 airplanes, almost triple that of SpiceJet (99 airplanes) and five times GoAir's fleet size (56 airplanes) as of March 2021.
