Markets get the jitters before UP poll results

Election worries: Markets tend to value stability and pro-market parties, and the upcoming UP election results have traders and investors worrying about the implications of an SP-Congress win. With exit polls predicting BJP wins or that BJP will emerge as the single largest party in a majority of states, markets are poised expectantly a win - a loss for Modi and the BJP parties would mean sharp losses for the markets in the following days.

The Indian government's UPI payments app, as well as the launch of Aadhaar Pay, which enables banking transactions with Aadhaar+fingerprint, have forced electronic payment providers like PayTM and MobiKwik to cut fees and transaction costs. Executives are acknowledging that e-wallets as a standalone business are not viable, and adding additional services such as providing interest on deposits, to stay viable.

The 13 observations in the Form 483 issued by FDA investigations mean multiple violations at the plant of the US Food Drugs & Cosmetics Act.

After Maruti Suzuki and Toyota, its now Tata Motors and Volkswagen's turn. H1B spouses may lose the right to work in the US

H1B spouses may lose the right to work in the US

Spouses of H1B visa holders may not be able to work in the US, in a potential reversal of the Obama administration's position that had permitted spouses of H1B visa holders to take up US jobs. The move by the Obama administration that permitted spouses to work had been challenged by American groups in court.

The Department of Justice, now headed by Jeff Sessions, who is known for his strong anti-immigration views, has requested 60 days from the court to study the case, a move observers say may indicate that the new administration will reverse the previous government's stance.

Steel companies including JSW Steel and Tata Steel are likely to benefit from a move the Indian government is considering, that would mandate the use of local steel for government infrastructure projects. Government sources said that the move is a WTO-compliant measure meant to curb low-cost steel imports from China. The Indian government has budgeted $59 billion for 2017-18 for steel-intensive infrastructure projects such as ports, roads, railways and power.

Upcoming Fed rate hike spooks markets

Upcoming Fed rate hike spooks markets

The US Federal Reserve is set to increase rates faster than expected, with Fed Chair Janet Yellen saying that interest rates would be raised in the Fed's meeting in March if "conditions stay favorable". This has heightened worries among Asian and Indian investors that money will move back to the US to take advantage of higher interest rates. China in the meantime has lowered its growth target to "around 6.5%" in the midst of an economy struggling with industrial overcapacity and rising debt.

Subscription for the Music Broadcast Limited IPO starts today, with analysts bullish on the prospective IPO. The IPO for MBL (which owns RadioCity), analysts say, is discounted compared to the larger listed peer Entertainment Network India Limited (ENIL) which operates radio stations under Radio Mirchi name. The IPO shares are in the price band of Rs. 324-333 per share.

The revolving-door of senior executives out of Indian startups, and the slow down in funding are discouraging new hires from joining unicorn firms. The 2014 goldrush appears to have come to an end, when senior business leaders from larger companies, banks and consulting were joining India's high-profile unicorn startups. Now with salaries being pared and pink slips handed out, the space is looking a lot less attractive.

Economists surprised by strong GDP numbers

Economists surprised by strong GDP numbers

"Forecasting India's GDP has become like predicting the English weather," one senior economist with an international ratings agency told Reuters, and many economists are taken aback by GDP numbers that are substantially higher than their predictions post demonetization. The government has seized on the strong growth numbers, with Prime Minister Modi telling a crowd in UP that, "Hard work is more important than Harvard."

Economists are pointing to government figures showing growth in consumer spending hitting a four-year high, even as sales of beverages, home appliances and vehicles fell. In some sectors numbers released for January and February sales by companies such as Maruti Suzuki, have shown stronger domestic sales compared to the same period last year.

DLF's Board of Directors has approved a proposal for promoters to sell 40% of their stake in a rental unit, which is expected to raise about Rs. 12,000 crore. The amount raised will reduce DLF's debt, in a transaction the company is calling a "game changer" for the firm.
