India needs to add 100 mn tonnes of steel making capacity by 2030: Secy

India needs to add 100 million tonnes (MT) of steel making capacity by 2030 on priority to avoid becoming dependent on imports, Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik said on Friday. He also pointed out that slumped steel demand and over capacities globally have affected domestic industry. The official made the remarks at an event organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in the national capital. One priority is to create more capacity. India has about 200 MT steel capacity at present. Roughly 20 MT was added this financial year, he said. "So we have to add another 100 MT of capacity in next six years. If we don't do that, then we basically become dependent on the imports," the Poundrik said addressing the session 'Viksit Bharat: India@2047 through Prism of Steel Sector'. Steel sector's tech investment likely to hit $2.7 bn by 2030: Report

The investments in process and digital technologies across the steel value chain in the country are expected to grow up to USD 2.7 billion by 2030, according to a report. These investments will advance technological capabilities and drive progress toward a more efficient and sustainable mining and steel industry, the FICCI-Deloitte Report said on Thursday. "The investment in process and digital technologies across the steel value chain in India is projected to increase from USD 1-1.2 billion in 2024 to USD 2.3-2.7 billion by 2030, excluding ERP upgrades," said the report on 'Automation, Digitalisation and Technology Integration for the Indian Mining and Steel sector'. Steel industry saved Rs 34,800 cr forex by reducing imports: Scindia

The government policies for steel sector helped the country save Rs 34,800 crore in foreign exchange by reducing imports and added around 60 million tonnes (MT) of crude steel capacity, Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said. India pushed Japan to third place to become the world's second largest steel producing nation, the minister for steel said while addressing a press conference titled 'The 9-years of government's seva, sushasan and gareeb kalyan focusing on steel sector'. From an installed capacity of 109.85 MT in 2014-15, India's steel capacity increased by a sharp 46 per cent to 160.30 MT in 2022-23, he said, adding the total production rose 42 per cent from 88.98 MT to 126.26 MT. The per capita steel consumption also rose from 60.8 kilogramme to 86.7 kg during the said period, registering a rise of 43 per cent. Increasing production, raw material security steel sector's focus in 2022

Increasing per capita steel consumption and production of special steel as well as enhancing raw material security will remain the key focus areas of the government in 2022. Minister of State (MoS) Faggan Singh Kulaste said the focus will also be on finding new markets as the production of steel continues to grow in the country. As per the National Steel Policy 2017, the government has set a target to ramp up the country's crude steel production output to 300 million tonnes (MT) by 2030. The policy also seeks to increase the domestic per capita steel consumption to the level of 160 kg by 2030.
