Mexico hit by injury blow as Marcel Ruiz tears ACL and to miss World Cup

In the span of three days, Mexico has lost two players for the World Cup. Midfielder Marcel Ruiz tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, his club Toluca announced on Friday. The 25-year-old Ruiz injured the joint on Wednesday in a CONCACAF Champions Cup match against San Diego of the MLS. Toluca said in a statement that in addition to the ligament rupture, Ruiz also suffered a meniscus tear in the same joint and will undergo surgery. "Everyone at this club regrets what happened and we stand in solidarity with him, wishing him a speedy recovery," the team said. Mexico plays the World Cup opener on June 11 against South Africa. Ruiz was key in helping Toluca win their second consecutive championship last December. Ruiz received his first call-up to the senior national team in 2023, and has been one of the most consistent players since Javier Aguirre took over as manager in August 2024. Canada's Alphonso Davies out with injury again, Bayern Munich says

Bayern Munich left back Alphonso Davies strained his right hamstring in a Champions League win over Atalanta, the Bundesliga club said. Bayern didn't specify a timeline for the Canada international's return, but a similar injury during a Feb. 21 game had kept Davies out for just over two weeks. Canada co-hosts the World Cup with the United States and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. The 25-year-old Davies had returned in December from a torn ACL sustained one year ago while playing for his country. Bayern also gave updates on goalkeeper Jonas Urbig and forward Jamal Musiala, both of whom were also injured in the team's 6-1 win over Atalanta on Tuesday. Bayern only said that all three players "are set for a spell on the sidelines." Musiala has a left ankle injury. Urbig was diagnosed with a concussion. He was in for injured first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

ACL surgery forces steeplechaser Sable to miss September World Championship

Asian Games gold medallist 3000m steeplechaser Avinash Sable has undergone ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery after suffering the injury during the Monaco Diamond League earlier this month and the Indian will be ruled out of World Athletics Championships in September. The 30-year-old Sable, the reigning Asian champion and a gold medallist in the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, went under the knife in a Mumbai hospital. The procedure was performed under the care of well-known surgeon Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala. An ACL surgery normally takes at least six months to heal, and it means that Sable will be ruled out of the Tokyo World Championships (September 13-21) and he will be able to come back to action only next year.
