Amid early onset of summer and a pick-up in industrial demand for electricity, state-owned CIL on Tuesday said it is geared up to meet the demand of dry fuel from the power sector. The public sector coal producer also expressed hope to supply 156 million tonnes of coal to the power sector during April-June quarter of FY24. This would be 25.6 per cent of the enhanced annual dispatch target of 610 million tonnes (MT) slated for the sector in 2023-24. India's coal production target at 1,017 mn tonnes for next fiscal: Joshi

The country's coal production target has been fixed at 1,017 million tonnes for the next fiscal, Parliament was informed on Monday. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, coal minister Pralhad Joshi said the steps were being taken by the Centre to augment the coal output in the country by engaging mine developers and operators. "The target of all India coal production has been fixed at 1,017 million tonnes (MT) for the financial year 2023-24," the minister said. State-owned CIL has identified 15 projects having a total project rated capacity of 168.58 million tonnes per year for implementation through MDO mode. Out of these 15 projects, Letter of Award has already been given to nine projects. NLC India Ltd is implementing two MDO projects.

India's coal production rises by nearly 13% in January to 89.96 mn tonnes

The country's coal production increased by 12.94 per cent to 89.96 million tonnes in January 2023. The country's coal output stood at 79.65 million tonnes (MT) in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal. As per provisional data of the coal ministry, Coal India Ltd (CIL) registered a production growth of 11.44 per cent in January, whereas SCCL and captive mines, and others posted a growth of 13.93 per cent and 22.89 per cent, respectively. Of the top 37 coal producing mines, production of 28 was more than 100 per cent, while the output of three mines stood between 80 and 100 per cent during last month. At the same time, coal despatch increased by 8.54 per cent to 81.91 MT last month compared to 75.47 MT in January last fiscal. "The power utilities despatch has increased by 8.01 per cent to 67.72 MT during Jan'23 as compared to 62.70 MT in Jan'22," it said. CIL accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal output.

CIL to produce sand using overburden rocks; likely to begin ops by next yr

State-owned CIL intends to produce sand using overburden rocks lying at its various coal mines and the operation of five such sand plants is likely to commence by next year, the government said on Friday. Under the 'overburden (OB) rocks-to-manufactured sand' initiative, Coal India Ltd (CIL) facilitates processing of waste overburden at its open cast mines. "CIL has envisaged to process the overburden rocks for sand production in mines where OB material contain about 60 per cent sandstone by volume which is harnessed through crushing and processing of overburden," the coal ministry said in a statement. Out of the five proposed plants, Ballarpur Plant of Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) is expected to commence sand production by May. Four plants -- one each in WCL, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL) and Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL)-- are under different stages of tendering process. To fast-track the 'OB-to-sand' initiative, CIL has prepared a model bid .

Coal India should aim to provide electricity at just price: Chairman

State-owned CIL chief Pramod Agrawal has said that the coal behemoth should aim at providing electricity to the county at "just price" as 80 per cent of the company's supplies is directed towards coal-based power plants. MCL supplied 143.4 million tonnes of coal till Dec this current fiscal: CIL

State-owned CIL on Tuesday said that its arm MCL supplied 143.4 million tonnes of coal till December in the current fiscal, the highest among all the subsidiaries of the coal behemoth. Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd's (MCL) supplies accounted for 28.2 per cent of the total off-take of 507.8 million tonnes from Coal India Ltd (CIL). "MCL's growth curve has been phenomenal in FY23 in terms of production and supplies, the highest among all our subsidiaries," a senior executive of CIL was quoted as saying in a statement and added "this helped us in pushing up our overall output and off-take". MCL's coal off-take peaked to 146.12 million tonnes (MTs) on January 5, overtaking the total supplies that the company registered for full year of FY21. Coal dispatch to different sectors rises 5% to 78.91 MT in December 2022

The dispatch of coal to different sectors was at 78.91 million tonnes (MT) in December, registering a rise of 5.28 per cent. The coal dispatch in the corresponding month of previous fiscal was 74.95 MT. "During Dec 2022, CIL (Coal India), SCCL (Singareni Collieries Company Ltd) and captive mines/others registered a growth of 3.57 per cent, 17.89 per cent and 8.85 per cent by despatching 62.72 MT, 6.72 MT and 9.46 MT (of coal) respectively," as per the provisional figures of coal ministry. The dispatch of coal to the power sector increased by 4.26 per cent to 65.65 MT during the last month. The country's total coal production increased by 10.81 per cent to 82.87 MT from 74.79 MT during the last month as compared to the year-ago period.
