Coal India eyeing lithium blocks in Australia, Argentina: Chairman Prasad

State-owned CIL is looking at lithium blocks in Australia and Argentina, company's Chairman P M Prasad said on Wednesday. Speaking on the sidelines of the 11th Asian Mining Congress and the 11th International Mining Exhibition, Prasad said Coal India Ltd (CIL) is targetting a production of 875 million tonnes (MT) and offtake of 900 MT in the 2025-26 fiscal year. The company accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal production. Prasad further said the Rs 10 per tonne price hike for both coking and non-coking coal with effect from April 16 will have minor impact on the company's revenue. CIL's pithead stock as on March 31, 2025 was 106 million tonnes, the highest so far. CIL's foray into critical minerals is driven by the need to reduce its reliance on coal and align with global trends prioritising these minerals for clean energy technologies.

Coal India's output dips 0.8% in Jan, first monthly decline in FY25

Coal India Ltd (CIL) on Saturday reported its first monthly production de-growth with the miner's output reducing by 0.8 per cent year-on-year in January. The company produced 77.8 million tonnes (MT) of coal in January as compared to 78.4 MT in the year-ago month. Despite the January production decline, CIL's management remains optimistic about achieving strong growth in the February-March period of the current fiscal, an official said. In December 2024, Coal India's production increased by 5.25 per cent year-on-year. For the period from April 2024 to January 2025, CIL recorded a growth of 1.8 per cent with output reaching 621.1 MT, up from 610.3 MT in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. CIL's offtake in January stood at 68.6 MT, a 2.2 per cent increase, from 67.1 MT in the year-ago month. Coal India targets 4-5% production growth in FY25 despite challenges

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has acknowledged that the realistic production target for the current fiscal will be 806-810 million tonnes (MT), down from 838 million tonnes, company Chairman PM Prasad said on Friday. CIL production grew 2.2 per cent to 543 million tonnes till December in the current fiscal. But aiming to ramp up production in the remaining days of the fiscal, efforts are on to achieve a growth of around 4 to 5 per cent, he said. "We are targeting a production of 806-810 million tonnes in the current fiscal," Prasad said on the sidelines of the announcement of the 11th edition of the International Mining and Machinery Exhibition (IME 2025). "In the full year, we are targeting to achieve a realistic target of about 4-5 per cent growth," Prasad told PTI. Coal gasification projects: Govt gives LoAs to 4 entities for incentives

The government on Thursday gave letters of award to four entities, including BCGCL- a joint venture of CIL-BHEL - for availing fiscal incentives totalling Rs 4,150 crore for setting up coal gasification projects. Letters of Award (LoAs) have been given to CIL-BHEL , a consortium of CIL-GAIL , Coal India Ltd and New Era Cleantech Solution Pvt Ltd. "Ministry of Coal has reached a significant milestone in India's Coal Gasification Initiative with the issuance of LoAs to the selected applicants under Categories I and III of the Rs 8,500 crore Coal Gasification Incentive Scheme," the coal ministry said in a statement. BCGCL has been awarded Rs 1,350 crore of financial incentive under the scheme for its coal gasification project in Lakhanpur, Odisha. With a total investment of Rs 11,768 crore, the project aims to produce 0.66 million tonne per annum of ammonium nitrate. Coal India's total production up by 2% to 471 million tonnes in Apr-Nov

State-owned CIL's coal production rose by 2.4 per cent to 471 million tonnes (MT) in the April-November period of the current financial year. Coal India Ltd (CIL) produced 460 MT of coal in the year-ago period. CIL accounts for over 80 per cent of the domestic coal production. The company's production also rose by 1.7 per cent to 67.2 MT in November against 66 MT in the corresponding month a year ago, CIL said in a regulatory filing to BSE. Coal offtake by CIL, which is the amount of dry fuel supplied from coal pitheads, rose by 1.5 per cent to 492.6 MT in the April-November period of the current fiscal, compared to 485.2 MT in the year-ago period. The company's coal offtake in November was almost flat at 63 MT, over 62.9 MT in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal, the filing said. CIL to supply coal beyond normative requirement to non-regulated sector

State-owned CIL on Thursday said it will supply coal beyond the normative requirement to the non-regulated sector, including steel. The decision, taken on November 13, will be applicable tranche VIII linkage auction onwards, which is scheduled to begin soon. Coal India, which accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal production, has tweaked the policy provision to permit coal supplies beyond the annual contracted quantity (ACQ) to non-regulated sector (NRS) customers in long-term linkage auctions. Earlier, in NRS linkage auctions, end user plants were allowed to obtain linkages up to their normative requirement. The standard norm to calculate the requirement is the quantity of coal that a plant will need if it operated at 85 per cent of its installed capacity for a whole year. Coal Minister urges CIL to boost production and reduce import reliance

State-owned CIL's priorities should be to ramp up production of coal and scale up supplies to reduce imports, Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has said. Coking coal import cannot be substituted fully, says CIL MD Prasad

CIL Chairman and Managing Director P M Prasad on Monday said coking coal import cannot be substituted fully, but some part of it can be reduced. Coking coal, also known as metallurgical coal, is used to produce coke, a key component in steel-making process. As per the data compiled by mjunction services ltd, India's coal import in 2023-24 was 268.24 MT, which includes 57.22 MT coking coal and 175.96 MT non-coking coal. Speaking during stakeholders' consultation on mining operators-cum-developers (MDO) and Star Rating of Coal Mines Award Ceremony, the CMD said coking coal import cannot be substituted fully, but some part of it can be reduced. The coking coal import can be brought down if its production through domestic sources is increased, he noted.
