Form high level panel for strategy to tackle crimes against women: DCW

The Delhi Commission for Women has written to the Union home secretary in the wake of a woman being killed after beng dragged under a car, suggesting that a high-level committee be formed for a coordinated strategy to tackle crimes against women. In her letter to Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on Tuesday, DCW chief Swati Maliwal recommended that the panel be chaired by the Union home minister and include Delhi's lieutenant governor, chief minister and the police commissioner. It should meet once a month and "create a coordinated strategy for tackling crimes against women and girls in the capital", Maliwal said. The 20-year-old was killed after her scooter was hit by a car. She was dragged by the car for 12 kilometers and her body was found in Kanjhawala area. Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal on Friday wrote to the Lok Sabha speaker and Rajya Sabha chairman urging them to suspend the day's business in both houses of Parliament to discuss the issue of women's safety on the 10th anniversary of the Nirbhaya gangrape incident. Delhi acid attack: DCW sends notices to e-commerce firms on sale of acid

In the wake of an acid attack on a teenager, the Delhi Commission for Women on Thursday issued notices to two e-commerce firms for allegedly allowing sale of acid on their platform. Police have arrested three accused in the case and found that the main accused had procured the acid through an e-commerce portal. Calling the easy availability of acid online a matter of grave concern, the DCW sought a detailed action taken report from the two firms by December 20. A 17-year-old girl on her way to school was attacked with acid on Wednesday by two bike-borne youths in West Delhi's Mohan Garden area. The girl is currently in Burns ICU of Safdarjung Hospital.

Mehrauli murder: Accused should get strictest punishment, says DCW chief

DCW chief Swati Maliwal on Tuesday said the murder of a woman by her live-in partner in the national capital's Mehrauli area is perhaps "one of the scariest cases" of her life and demanded stringent punishment for the accused. The woman, Shraddha Walkar, was from Maharashtra and was living here with Aaftab Amin Poonawalla. Poonawalla allegedly strangled her and sawed her body into 35 pieces which he kept in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks at their residence in south Delhi's Mehrauli before dumping them across the city over several days, according to police. "According to media (reports), Aftab used to store food in the same fridge in which he had kept Shraddha's body parts. While the body parts were at his home, he would bring over another woman. "This is perhaps one of the scariest cases of my life. Aftab should get the strictest punishment," Maliwal said in a tweet in Hindi. Accused Aftab Ameen Poonawala (28) allegedly chopped Shraddha Walkar's body into 35 pieces, kept them in a refrigerator for almost three weeks and dumped them in various parts of Delhi over several days. Details of the killing and its grisly aftermath came to light almost six months later with Poonawala's arrest, officials said. Some chopped body parts have been found and police are looking for the murder weapon, they said. The officials said Poonawala bought a 300-litre fridge to keep the severed body parts and used incense sticks and room freshners to suppress the foul smell emanating from the corpse.
