Edelweiss Finance to set up new entity to turn around distressed cos

MUMBAI: Edelweiss Financial Services is planning to set up a dedicated entity to operationally turn around the businesses they acquired by its asset reconstruction division. This is the first time in India that any financial company has introduced this concept of 'turnaround consultancy' with a dedicated team for working with the management of the distressed company. Edelweiss has already hired a senior official from Alvarez & Marsal, Sumanth Cidambi, to manage this entity, according to two persons aware of the development. Currently, bankers and financial institutions hire firms like Alvarez & Marsal, Ernst & Young and McKinsey for the job of turnaround management, corporate restructuring and performance improvement for companies and stakeholders. An email sent to Edelweiss went unanswered. Turnaround consultancy offers critical assistance to companies that are in a crisis by working directly with the company's management to stabilise its financial and operational performance by developing and implementing comprehensive profitability and working capital plans. At Alvarez & Marsal, Cidambi worked for over two years in airlines and thermal power plant-related projects. Speculation regarding this announcement has pushed up the Edelweiss Financial Services stock by 29.48% so far this month. The stock ended up 6% at Rs 75.10 on Friday. Edelweiss ARC is the country's largest asset restructuring company with over 40% market share. Currently, Edelweiss ARC business has assets under management of over Rs 27,000 crore.
