ECL urges staff to boost coal output to meet annual production targets

Coal India subsidiary Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) has urged its employees to enhance production in the final quarter of the current fiscal to bridge the gap between targets and achievements, citing shortfalls in cumulative output till December. In a message to employees ahead of the 77th Republic Day, ECL CMD Satish Jha said cumulative coal production up to December 2025 stood at 33.482 million tonnes, below the proportionate target of 38.752 million tonnes, underscoring the need for accelerated production in the remaining months of the fiscal. The Coal India arm, however, said it remained on a strong operational footing, supported by robust overburden removal of 133.013 million cubic metres during the period, which it described as a key area of strength enabling higher coal output. Republic Day 2026: Space hero Shubhanshu Shukla awarded Ashoka Chakra

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who created history by becoming the first Indian to visit the International Space Station (ISS), was on Monday awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award. In June last year, Shukla became the second Indian to have gone to space and the first one to set foot on the ISS as part of the Axiom-4 mission. Shukla's 18-day space odyssey came 41 years after cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma flew aboard a Russian Soyuz in 1984. Nalco eyes 200-300 MW green power with battery storage for clean aluminium

State-owned Nalco is transitioning its power-intensive smelting operations to renewable energy sources, and plans to set up 200-300 MW of green power capacity backed by battery storage to ensure a reliable supply and significantly cut overall carbon emissions. Nalco, which currently relies 100 per cent on coal-based captive power plants that account for 80 per cent of its carbon emissions, plans to ramp up its efforts to produce green aluminium, its Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) Brijendra Pratap Singh said. The smelting process, which constitutes 35-40 per cent of production costs, draws power from in-house coal plants at Rs 3-3.5 per unit, while green power rates hover at Rs 4.5-5 per unit, he said. In a bid to address this, National Aluminium Company Ltd (Nalco) is pursuing power purchase agreements (PPAs), developing its own green power plants, and appointing a consultant to devise strategies for securing green energy at minimal cost with round-the-clock availability, he .

Vedanta's iron ore mining arm, Sesa Goa, has urged the government to provide incentives for low-grade iron ore beneficiation, emphasising that targeted policy support and infrastructure investment are critical to make the processing economically viable and to expand the sector. The low-grade iron ore beneficiation process enhances the iron content of low-quality ores by removing impurities like silica, alumina, and phosphorus, thereby making them suitable for steel production. With India's steel demand projected to reach 300 million tonnes by 2030, unlocking low-grade reserves through beneficiation could boost domestic supply security, create jobs, and add billions to government revenues via expanded mining and exports.
