Rohit wins javelin gold, eyes Worlds spot; Sreeshankar falls short

Uttar Pradesh's international javelin thrower Rohit Yadav clinched the men's javelin throw gold medal at the National Inter-Sate Athletics Championships to keep himself in contention for a berth in next month's World Championships in Tokyo through world ranking quota, here on Sunday. Star long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, who needed to breach the qualifying mark of 8.27m for a direct entry to the World Championships, could not do so as he produced a best effort of 8.06m, which was, though, enough for him to win a gold. On the fifth and final day of the championships, the 24-year-old Rohit grabbed the men's javelin title with a best throw of 83.65m which he achieved in his third attempt. Sachin Yadav, also of Uttar Pradesh, was a close second with a distance of 83.20m, while Maharashtra's promising thrower Shivam Lohakare was third with 80.20m. DPL: New Delhi Tigers Crush North Delhi Strikers with 8-wicket win

New Delhi Tigers produced a scintillating all-round performance to register a comprehensive 8-wicket victory over North Delhi Strikers in their Delhi Premier League (DPL). Batting first, the Strikers struggled right from the start as they lost wickets in quick succession, slipping to 54/6 inside 12 overs. But Vaibhav Kandpal and Arjun Rapria came to the rescue with a fighting 58-run stand for the seventh wicket. Rapria's innings of 29 (24) kept the scoreboard ticking, while Kandpal played a spirited knock of 45 (32), but their efforts only managed to take the side to 124/9 in 20 overs. Ganga water levels cross danger mark in Varanasi, ghats inundated

The water level of the Ganga river crossed the danger mark here on Monday morning, submerging ghats and forcing the authorities to shift cremation and other religious rituals to rooftops and raised platforms, officials said. According to the Central Water Commission, the Ganga was flowing at 72.1 metres by Monday morning, above the danger level of 71.262 metres. Shivam Agrahari of Ganga Seva Nidhi said all ghats have been submerged, cutting off access. The famed Ganga 'aarti' at the Dashashwamedh ghat is now being conducted on rooftops, while cremations at Manikarnika and Harishchandra ghats are being performed on elevated platforms. District authorities have imposed a ban on boat movement in the river as a precautionary measure. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are patrolling the flood-affected areas and rescuing stranded individuals to safer locations, the officials said.
