The past five years have been grueling for electric utilities in India owing to (1) Shortage of domestic coal, (2) Higher international coal prices, (3) Unviable DISCOMs hampering demand growth, (4) Depreciating rupee, (5) Aggressive bidding rendering many PPAs unviable, and (6) Delay in clearances leading to time and cost overruns.
