Upcoming GST rollout has markets wary

Concerns about the mechanics of the GST rollout has markets concerned, as rumors of tech hiccups and potential delays abound in the news. The fear of short term chaos has caused the Sensex to stay flat, especially with global markets not providing very cheery news either, as the Brexit negotiations get underway and the Syrian airspace becomes a source of conflict between Russia, Iran and the US.

There are expectations that the GST will initially trigger supply chain challenges for companies, as well as an initial rise in prices of some goods and products. The pharma industry for instance, may face problems with drug sellers and medical stores already reducing their stocks in the lead up to the rollout.

However, one particular sector that is bullish on GST and gaining in share price as the rollout nears is logistics. This sector, which includes firms such as Snowman Logistics and AllCargo Logistics, will benefit with the GST set to bring in transparency to supply chain pricing, and also streamline movement of goods across Indian states. VAT related check points on state borders will disappear. Additionally, managing supplies will become cheaper, as the location of warehouses will no longer be dependent on local taxes and subsidies. Instead, warehouses can be consolidated into larger, and fewer locations.
