Indian government proposes wide-ranging agri reforms, Infosys to hire American workers

The Indian government is proposing wide-ranging reform of agricultural markets, creating a single market for agricultural produce that would give farmers more freedom to sell their crops beyond the closest mandi. This follows up on PM Modi's launch of an electronic National Agriculture Market (eNAM) platform, and model laws on land leasing and better insurance schemes. Agriculture being a state subject, the central government can only propose reforms, although there is pressure on the states to reduce the regulation on the sector to increase farmer incomes.

Infosys has responded to proposals for increased H1B visa curbs, by announcing plans to hire 10,000 American workers over two years, across four new technology centres in the United States. The 10,000 new U.S. jobs would be a small part of Infosys' overall workforce of more than 200,000. However, this marks a shift in hiring strategy in the wake of criticism from the US administration that companies like TCS and Infosys were replacing US workers with foreign ones.
