Union minister launches campaign to promote reuse, recycle of old clothes

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday launched a campaign -- "Meri LiFE, Mera Swachh Shehar" -- to promote reuse and recycle of old items such as clothes, shoes, toys and books, according to an official statement. According to the statement, urban India is increasingly adopting the principles of making wealth from waste with citizens actively refurbishing old items for reuse. This is giving an impetus to the overall zero-waste ecosystem under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0. This nationwide campaign aims to highlight cities to set up "reduce, reuse, recycle (RRR) centres" -- one-stop centres for citizens to contribute clothes, shoes, old books, toys and used plastic to be reused or recycled. Promoters of stalled real estate projects must be barred for life: FPCE

Homebuyers' body FPCE has suggested that promoters of stalled real estate projects must be barred for life, besides conducting forensic audits to ascertain the diversion of funds, making projects financially unviable. Forum for People's Collective Efforts (FPCE) president Abhay Upadhyay has written to Amitabh Kant, Chairman, Committee on Stalled Projects, suggesting measures for the revival and completion of stuck projects across the country. The panel held its second meeting on May 8 to examine the issues related to legacy stalled projects. In an order dated March 31, the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has set up a 14-member committee headed by former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant to examine issues related to stalled real estate projects and recommend ways for their completion. Centre launches competition for cities to create beautiful public spaces

The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has launched a 'City Beauty Competition' that aims to encourage and recognise transformational efforts made by cities and wards to create beautiful, innovative and inclusive public spaces. In a statement on Thursday, the ministry said under this competition, wards and public spaces in cities would be judged on five broad pillars accessibility, amenities, activities, aesthetics and ecology. 850-900 million Indians likely to live in urban areas by 2050: Minister

Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Tuesday that India is likely to have 850-900 million people living in urban areas by 2050, pointing out that urbanisation is taking place at a fast pace. The Union housing and urban affairs minister said the challenges for urban sectors are changing. "Urbanisation is taking place at a faster pace. Every minute, 20-30 people are coming (to urban areas). By 2050, India is likely to see 850-900 million people living in urban spaces," Puri told reporters on the sidelines of an event. States to establish 100 food streets across 100 districts: Centre

The Union Health Ministry, in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, has written to the states and Union Territories to develop 100 food streets in 100 districts across the country. The initiative is being taken up as a pilot project to create an example for other such streets to come up across the country to ensure safe and hygienic food practices. Govt sets up panel to find way forward for stalled realty projects

The Centre's move to set up a panel to examine issues related to stalled real estate projects and suggest ways for their completion is a step in the right direction, homebuyers' body FPCE said on Tuesday. The grouping also expressed hope that practical solutions would emerge for benefits of all stakeholders but rued that the panel does not have anyone representative of homebuyers. Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry gets 26 proposals to develop new cities

The Union Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) Ministry has received 26 proposals from 21 states to develop new cities to meet the demand for urban expansion in the country and they are currently at scrutiny and evaluation stage, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday. In a written response to a question, Minister of State for HUA Kaushal Kishore said the 15th Finance Commission has allocated Rs 8,000 crore for performance-based challenge fund for incubation of eight new cities and the amount available for each proposed new city is Rs 1,000 crore. "A state can have only one new city through this fund. Thus, maximum nine new cities in nine states can be selected," the minister said. Considering the small urban population in north-east and hill states, Rs 1,000 crore for two new cities (Rs 500 crore each) for two different states has been proposed, he said. Parl panel suggests modifying PMAY-U after impact assessment study

A parliamentary panel has recommended to the government to conduct an impact assessment study of its urban housing scheme and explore the feasibility of extending it with modifications or formulating another similar one to benefit the urban poor at large to achieve the objective of 'Housing for All'. The Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs also sought to know the number of slums de-notified since the implementation of the In-Situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR) vertical of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) and observed that the housing ministry is duty-bound to maintain the data pertaining to the outcome of its mission and schemes.
