Met dept forecasts downpour in Assam for next 5 days, issues 'red' alert

The India Meteorological Department on Sunday issued a 'red' alert, predicting very heavy rainfall across several districts of Assam in the next five days. The warning comes at a time when Assam is witnessing the first wave of flood this year due to incessant rain across the state in the last few days. In a special weather bulletin, IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati issued the 'red' alert for Sunday and Monday with prediction of "heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy (11-20 cm in 24 hrs) with extremely heavy rainfall (over 20 cm in 24 hours)" in lower Assam districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta and Bongaigaon. During the same period, "heavy to very heavy" rainfall is likely in Dhubri, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Nalbari, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Goalpara and Karimganj districts, it added. Nearly 21,000 people affected by flood in Assam, says official bulletin

Nearly 21,000 people have been affected by flood in Assam, an official bulletin said on Wednesday. According to the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 20,900 people have been hit due to flooding in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts. Over 20,700 people are suffering in Lakhimpur while 160 people have been affected in Dhemaji, it said. Currently, 19 villages have been inundated and crops in over 13.5 hectares of land have been damaged, the bulletin said. However, in other districts including Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dima Hasao, Dibrugarh and Golaghat districts, floodwaters have not entered houses but embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged. The flood was caused after the northeastern state received heavy rainfall over the last few days. No river, however, is flowing above the danger mark as of now, the bulletin said. Ranchi gets 5 urban health, wellness centres for easy availability of PHCs

Five urban health and wellness centres (UHWC) were inaugurated here on Thursday to ensure easy availability of primary healthcare facilities to residents of the city. Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) administrator Shashi Ranjan launched a centre at Pahan Toli, while four others were inaugurated by the local RMC representatives. Ranjan said more such centres would come up here soon. As many as 24 UHWCs are proposed to be opened in Ranchi under recommendations of 15th finance commission, as official said. Availability of land appears to be a problem for the project. Five centres were started today, most of them in community building. Rest 19 will be opened very soon depending upon the availability of land, said RMC's additional administrator Kunwar Singh Pahan. The UHWC would be in addition to Atal Clinics. MeT issues 'Yellow' warning for thunderstorm in Assam, neighbouring states

The Met department on Sunday warned of thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds in Assam and its neighbouring areas over the next two days. As per the forecast released by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), a cyclonic circulation is lying over east Assam and neighbourhood between 1.5 km and 2.1 km above mean sea level. Issuing a yellow' category warning for two days, it said thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty wind reaching speed up to 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Sunday. The IMD uses four colour codes - green (no action needed), yellow (watch and stay updated), orange (be prepared) and red (take action) - for weather warning. Free canteen for farmers visiting state-run Mandis in Odisha's Gajapati

For the first time free canteens for farmers have been opened in Odisha near paddy procurement centers to provide lunch to those who bring their produce from distant villages. The canteens have been set up in Gajapati district and at least four such canteens have been opened at Paralakhemundi, Kashinagar, Upalada and Garabandh, a district administration official said on Monday. Vegetable meals prepared by the women self help groups (WSHGs) of the areas are being served to the farmers at the free canteens being run by the Paralakhemundi regulated market committee (RMC), Gajapati collector Lingraj Panda said. "We have launched the canteen system to provide free lunch to farmers who come to the procurement centers with their produce and cannot return home for their meal," Panda said.
