    Telecom dept starts process to disband Digital Communication Commission

    The Department of Telecom has begun the process of disbanding the Digital Communication Commission, formerly known as the Telecom Commission, the apex inter-ministerial body formed to make decisions on policy matters and subjects with significant financial implications. The body comprises the Telecom Secretary as its Chairman, four full-time members, who are ex-officio Secretaries to the Government of India in the Department of Telecommunications and four part-time members who are the secretaries to the Government of India in the concerned Departments. "The process for seeking cabinet nod to dissolve the Digital Communication Commission has started," an official source told PTI. Among the ex-officio secretaries, the post of member (technology) and member (services) are lying vacant and the government has no plans to fill them.     India offers over 1 trn digital connectivity opportunity: BIF President

    India has a digital connectivity opportunity worth Rs 1 lakh crore at a conservative estimate, which can be largely achieved through satellite communication services, a senior official of industry body BIF said on Tuesday. Speaking on the sidelines of the 10th edition of India Satcom 2026, Broadband India Forum (BIF) President TV Ramachandran said an analysis of data published by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) shows that around 50 crore or more people in rural India are still not connected to broadband. "There are more than 50 crore people who are still unconnected, mostly in rural and remote parts of the country. Even if we consider low ARPU from these areas, the present opportunity is at least around Rs 1 lakh crore per annum at present. These people are not connected because the terrestrial network has not reached them. They can be largely served by satcom services," he said.     Delhi govt extends pink ticket scheme for women on DTC buses till August 31

    The Delhi government has again extended the pink ticket facility for women passengers in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses till August 31, an official order said on Saturday. In an earlier direction issued by the transport department, 'Pink Saheli' smart card was supposed to be made mandatory from August 16. "The competent authority has now been pleased to accord approval for further extension of the existing arrangement for issuance of paper-based pink tickets up to August 31. Accordingly, during this extended period, eligible women passengers may continue to be issued paper-based pink tickets for availing the free bus travel facility in DTC/DoT (Cluster) buses," the order said. During the extended period, special emphasis shall be laid on public awareness through depot announcements, in-bus announcements, social media, print media and other appropriate channels, it added. So far, around 18 lakh cards have been distributed across the city, and the government aims to increase
