    MCD removes 126,000 political ads from across city ahead of Assembly polls

    The Delhi municipal body has removed around 1.26 lakh posters, banners, hoardings and other types of political advertisements from across the city after the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into force in the national capital. Delhi will go to polls on February 5 and results will be declared on February 8. The Model Code of Conduct came kicked in Tuesday as the Election Commission announced the dates. Display of election posters, hoardings, banners etc highlighting the achievements of the parties is not permitted under the MCC. According to the data shared by MCD, the civic body removed 1,26,186 such advertisements from across its 12 zones till 5 pm on Wednesday. It removed around 1.03 lakh posters, banners and wall paintings, 13,496 hoardings, 7,845 flags, and 1,158 signages. The highest number of political advertisements were removed from South Delhi zone with 20,479 material taken down, followed by Civil Lines zone (19,892) and Shahadara south zone (18,821).

    Bangladesh CEC says 180 million people denied their voting rights

    Bangladesh's Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Sunday said that almost 180 million people have been denied their voting rights and the Election Commission wants to end their deprivation, The Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported. The CEC, while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a training programme for election officers ahead of a voter list updating exercise, said the Election Commission (EC) wants to remove the fact that the people have been deprived of the voting right for so long. We want to remove the pain of their deprivation. We are steadfast in our commitment, he said. The countrywide door-to-door data collection for updating the list of possible voters will start on January 20. The CEC said they are here to hear the 180 million people who have been suffering from the deprivation of voting rights.     Awami League may contest elections unless banned, says Bangladesh CEC

    Bangladesh's Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has said that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League may participate in elections unless the government or the judiciary issues a ban against the party. The chief election commissioner (CEC) said this during a meeting with election officials at the Chittagong Circuit House on Monday, The Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported. Nasir Uddin also assured that the Election Commission runs with complete independence and faces no external pressure.     Only 27% of registered third gender electors voted in 2024 LS polls: EC

    More people enrolled themselves in the voters' list for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the 'third gender' category but only 27 per cent of them turned up at the polling stations, according to Election Commission data. According to the data issued by the poll authority last week, 48,194 people were eligible to vote as third gender elector in 2024, compared to 39,075 in 2019 -- an increase of 23.5 per cent over the five-year period. But only 13,058 of them actually exercised their franchise, which comes to 27 per cent of the total registered third gender electors. As per the data, Tamil Nadu had the highest number of registered third gender elector -- 8,467. But only 2,709 cast vote. Their overall participation in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections was 14.64 per cent -- almost half as compared to the latest parliamentary polls.
