DU panel's decision to drop PG papers on Islam, Pakistan, China sparks row
    Business Standard
A Delhi University panel's decision to drop proposed postgraduate Political Science papers on Islam, Pakistan, and China has failed to find consensus among the members. While some called it ideological censorship, those who supported the decision termed it a step towards making the syllabus "India-centric" and free from bias. In its meeting on Wednesday, DU's Standing Committee for Academic Matters directed the removal of four elective papers -- Islam and International Relations, Pakistan and the World, China's Role in the Contemporary World, and State and Society in Pakistan. A fifth paper, Religious Nationalism and Political Violence, will be reviewed in the next meeting on July 1. Opposing the decision, committee member Professor Monami Sinha said such changes undermine critical thinking and reflect a push to dilute controversial but academically relevant content. "We argued that it is imperative to study Pakistan and China in detail. Ignoring these geopolitical realities would

Tensions at Kerala Univ as SFI demands removal of Bharat Mata portrait
    Business Standard
Tension prevailed at the Kerala University Senate campus here on Wednesday over the display of a portrait of Bharat Mata as part of a private function attended by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the students' wing of the ruling CPI(M), engaged in a war of words with the organisers of the event, Padmanabha Seva Samithi, and police, demanding to remove the portrait from the senate hall. However, the organisers, a pro-right wing outfit, said they would not remove the Bharat Mata portrait from the stage as part of the event as they booked the hall after meeting all necessary procedures. SFI leaders and university syndicate members, however, made it clear that they would not allow the programme to be held if the portrait was not removed from there, triggering tense moments on the campus. Notwithstanding the tense situation, the governor reached the campus and attended the event. Besides the SFI activists, the workers of the...

Integration of govt, industry and academia vital for growth: Jitendra Singh
    Business Standard
Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday called for the integration of government, industry and academia to achieve India's development goals, saying the age of working in silos is over. Speaking after inaugurating a state-of-the-art Incubation Centre at IIM Mumbai, Singh stressed that greater synergy between the public and private sectors is not an option, but a necessity. "The integration of academia, industry, and government is essential for India to meet its rapid development goals. The age of silos is over. Now we are getting more and more integrated," the MoS for Science and Technology said. The minister said all stakeholders, including representatives of the industry, should be brought together as the demarcation between the private and public sectors does not exist. "It is no longer an option, it is a necessity to achieve the country's development goals," the minister said. AI transforming meteorological prediction through innovation: IIT Delhi
    Business Standard
Artificial intelligence is transforming meteorological prediction through innovative approaches to tropical cyclone tracking and monsoon forecasting, two recent studies by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, researchers have demonstrated. The studies conducted under Professors Sandeep Sukumaran and Hairprasad Kodamana, have been published in the "Journal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation". The first study achieved significant advances in monsoon prediction through the application of transformer neural networks. The research team trained their model on a quarter-century of high-resolution satellite precipitation data, enabling the system to accurately forecast monsoon intraseasonal oscillation patterns with an 18-day lead time. "This represents a substantial improvement over existing dynamical models while requiring dramatically fewer computational resources. The AI system's ability to reliably predict active and break phases of the monsoon could

Decision on 3-language formula only after talks with stakeholders: Fadnavis
    Business Standard
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said a final decision on the three-language formula will be taken only after consultations with all stakeholders, including litterateurs, language experts and political leaders. Fadnavis chaired a meeting at his official residence in south Mumbai late Monday night to deliberate on the issue. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, School Education Minister Dada Bhuse, Minister of State Dr Pankaj Bhoyar and senior officials from the education department were present. The state government last week issued an amended order, stating Hindi will generally be taught as the third language to students in Marathi and English medium schools from Classes 1 to 5. The government had maintained that Hindi would not be compulsory, but mandated consent of at least 20 students per grade in a school for studying any Indian language other than Hindi. During the meeting chaired by CM Fadnavis on Monday, detailed discussions were held on the implications of
