    Monsoon hits Chandigarh, parts of Haryana, may intensify from June 25-30

    The southwest monsoon hit Chandigarh and parts of Haryana on Tuesday. According to the meterological department, conditions are favourable for its further advancement over Haryana and some more areas in Punjab in the next two days. The monsoon had advanced over parts of Punjab on Sunday. The Met office has forecast an increase in rainfall activity over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh from June 25-30. Meanwhile, the maximum temperatures hovered below normal limits at most places in the two states and Chandigarh on Tuesday. Chandigarh recorded a high of 34.1 degrees Celsius. In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a high of 33.9 degrees Celsius, Ludhiana 33.5, Patiala 33.1, Pathankot 34.1 and Mohali 33.3, while Bathinda experienced hot weather at a maximum of 40 degrees Celsius. In Haryana, Ambala recorded a high of 33.4 degrees Celsius, Hisar 36.7, Karnal 30.2, Narnaul 35.4 and Gurugram 36.

    Kharif paddy sowing up 58% to 1.3 million hectare till Jun 20: Govt

    Paddy sowing so far this Kharif season is higher by 58 per cent at 13.22 lakh hectares, according to the government data. Sowing of paddy stood at 8.37 lakh hectares in the same period last year. The Department of Agriculture has released progress of area coverage under kharif crops (summer-sown) as on June 20, 2025, an official statement said on Monday. The acreage of pulses has increased to 9.44 lakh hectare from 6.63 lakh hectare. Sowing of Shri Anna cum Coarse cereals rose to 18.03 lakh hectare over 14.77 lakh hectares in the year-ago period. In the non-foodgrains category, the acreage of oilseeds is down at 5.38 lakh tonnes against 5.89 lakh hectares in the same period last year. Sugarcane sowing is also slightly higher so far at 55.07 lakh hectare against 54.88 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. Area under cotton is higher at 31.25 lakh hectare from 29.12 lakh hectare. Total sowing area of all kharif crops has risen to 137.84 lakh hectare till June 20, 2025, from 124.88

    Kandla Port vows to ease vessel congestion for smooth edible oil imports

    Gujarat's Kandla Port has pledged to address vessel congestion issues and ensure uninterrupted edible oil supplies, the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association (IVPA) said on Monday. The assurance came during a meeting between industry representatives and Kandla Port Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh, aimed at resolving bottlenecks that have affected imports of palm oil and other edible oils. Singh outlined infrastructure improvements, including new 14-inch pipelines and preparations to handle edible oil at two additional berths with dedicated pipelines, the IVPA said in a statement. The port authority agreed to maintain its existing system of imposing penalty charges for delayed vessel discharges rather than moving ships to outer anchorage for re-berthing, which creates additional costs for importers, the association said. Singh emphasised the need for coordination between port officials and importers to minimise delays after vessels dock, and urged vessel agents to flag potential .

    The Congress on Friday reiterated its demand of making the Bihar reservations law a part of the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution, amending the Constitution to overcome the 50 per cent ceiling for reservations and implementing Article 15(5) which enables reservations for SCs, STs, OBCs, and EBCs in private educational institutions.
