Andhra Pradesh to launch LEAP model for education revamp, says Nara Lokesh
    Business Standard
Andhra Pradesh is revamping its education model this month with the launch of LEAP (Learning Excellence in Andhra Pradesh) model, aimed at overhauling curriculum, pedagogy and infrastructure, according to Education Minister Nara Lokesh. Play-based curriculum, pedagogy training and an AI-driven remedial assessment programme, Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), are among the major highlights of the model. "Andhra Pradesh is pioneering a new era of education through LEAP focusing on foundational learning, global best practices, and inclusive growth," Lokesh told PTI. The model will be introduced from the 2025-26 academic session. The Minister explained that the government's vision is to build a world-class education system in the state by 2029 by adopting an outcome-oriented approach to equip students with technical, leadership, and real-life skills through AI and other cutting-edge technologies. The need for the new model was felt after crucial reports, including the ASER sur

Second child dies as US battles worst measles outbreak in over 30 years
    Business Standard
A second unvaccinated child has died from measles in Texas, as the United States confronts its worst outbreak of the disease in more than 30 years. The school-aged child, with no underlying conditions, died from complications while hospitalised, according to the University Medical Center (UMC) Health System in Lubbock, a leading regional hospital and teaching institution. The death follows another fatal pediatric case in Texas in February and an adult death in neighbouring New Mexico in early March. Nationwide, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 607 measles cases across 21 states this year, more than double the total for all of 2023. Texas has reported 481 cases, the highest statewide tally in decades. "If this trend continues, we may surpass the 2019 outbreak -- the worst in nearly 30 years," Dr Peter Hotez, a leading vaccine expert at Baylor College of Medicine, told PTI. "And what's tragic is that these deaths are entirely preventable." Measl

Kaushik Basu calls Trump's reciprocal tariffs 'baffling', warns of risks
    Business Standard
Former World Bank Chief Economist Kaushik Basu on Sunday described the reciprocal tariffs imposed on approximately 60 countries by the Trump administration as baffling, saying that while these tariffs will have some adverse effects on India, the major impact will be felt in the US. Basu further said that it is also not really a reciprocal tariff as the Trump administration calls it, it is based on the trade deficit the US has with India. "The new US tariff of 26 per cent on India is baffling. While it will have some adverse impact on India, its major negative impact will be on the US," he told PTI. Basu, currently a Carl Marks Professor at Cornell University, said it is natural for a country like the US, which has a currency that is trusted and used worldwide, to have trade deficits. "Hence, this new tariff policy looks almost like an effort to erode trust in the US dollar," he added. Basu also suggested that India should not respond by raising or lowering tariffs on US...
