China lashes out at US as tensions escalate over space observatory in Chile
    Business Standard
China struck a defiant stance on Tuesday in response to American concerns about Beijing's efforts to expand its influence in the resource-rich South American nation of Chile, escalating tensions over a Chinese astronomical venture in Chile's arid north. At a press conference Tuesday in Chile's capital of Santiago, China's ambassador to Chile, Niu Qingbao, lambasted the United States for interfering in Chile's sovereign right to independently choose its partners and spreading "disinformation about the project. The astronomy project stems from a 2023 agreement between China's state-run National Astronomical Observatory and Chile's Catholic University of the North to work on a powerful space observatory in the country's vast northern Atacama Desert. The proposed high-resolution telescope would be able to observe near-Earth objects, which are classified as asteroids or comets. But the project quickly became entangled in China's spiralling rivalry with the Trump administration. Worries

Trump govt launches discrimination probe against Harvard Law Review
    Business Standard
The Trump administration on Monday announced federal officials are launching investigations into Harvard University and the Harvard Law Review, saying authorities have received reports of race-based discrimination "permeating the operations" of the journal. The investigations come as Harvard fights a freeze on USD 2.2 billion in federal grants the Trump administration imposed after the university refused to comply with demands to limit activism on campus. A letter sent to the university earlier this month called for the institution to clarify its campus speech policies that limit the time, place and manner of protests and other activities. It also demanded academic departments at Harvard that "fuel antisemitic harassment" be reviewed and changed to address bias and improve viewpoint diversity. Monday marked the first time that both sides met in court over the funding fight. The investigations by the US Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services were...

Health policy worked in silos before 2017, govt made it holistic: JP Nadda
    Business Standard
Union health minister J P Nadda on Saturday said the policy on health was working in silos before 2017 and used to take care of only the curative part. However, the Union government came out with a healthcare policy which was inclusive and holistic, he said after inaugurating a centre for nephrology and urology at Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Centre here. "Before 2017, we had a policy of health which was working in silos. It was a policy which took care of the curative part. The number of hospitals, dispensaries and institutes we made, it was all curative. But in 2017, we came out with a policy which was holistic, inclusive, which had preventive, promotive, curative, palliative, rehabilitative and gyratic parts," said Nadda. This policy incorporates everything from the first to the last breath, Nadda added. "Under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NWAS) currently there are 30,000 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and the government's target is to create 1.75 lakh of...

    Business Standard

Trump admin opens investigation into UC Berkeley over foreign funding
    Business Standard
The Trump administration launched an investigation into the University of California, Berkeley, on Friday centred on foreign funding, making it the latest university to be targeted by the federal government. The investigation revives criticism from several years ago about the university's partnership with China's Tsinghua University. It comes after President Donald Trump earlier this week signed a series of executive orders focused on universities that he views as liberal adversaries to his political agenda. One order called for harder enforcement of Section 117, a federal law requiring colleges to disclose foreign gifts and contracts valued at USD 2,50,000 or more. The Department of Education's Office of General Counsel will investigate "UC Berkeley's apparent failure to fully and accurately disclose significant funding received from foreign sources", Education Secretary Linda McMahon said in a statement. UC Berkeley denied the government's claims, saying that for the last two yea
