High US tariffs on China can boost India's manufacturing, says CEA
    Business Standard
Global disruptions have created opportunities for emerging nations like India, and US tariffs on China could drive manufacturing shift to India due to lower duties, Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran said on Saturday. While there are worries about the first, second, and third round effects of the tariffs in terms of external demand to start with and the overall uncertainty and therefore implications for capital formation etc, there are some favourable outcomes also, he said at an event organised by Ashoka University here. One of the positive impacts of the uncertain global environment is a reduction in crude oil prices which are now available around USD 60 per barrel. It is a windfall from India as it lowers input cost and also provides fiscal space, he said. "China plus one, which was a different dimension earlier, now acquires a much higher sense of urgency for many other companies located inside China. So in some sense, you can call it a second wind (in favour of .

216 deaths reported as US sees deadliest flu season for children in 15 yrs
    Business Standard
More US children have died this flu season than at any time since the swine flu pandemic 15 years ago, according to a federal report released Friday. The 216 pediatric deaths reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eclipse the 207 reported last year. It's the most since the 2009-2010 H1N1 global flu pandemic. It's a startlingly high number, given that the flu season is still going on. The final pediatric death tally for the 2023-2024 flu season wasn't counted until autumn. This number that we have now is almost certainly an undercount, and one that when the season is declared over, and they compile all the data it's almost certain to go up, said Dr. Sean O'Leary, of the American Academy of Pediatrics. There are likely several contributors to this season's severity, but a big one is that fewer children are getting flu shots, added O'Leary, a University of Colorado pediatric infectious diseases specialist. The flu vaccination rate for US children has plummeted f

Donald Trump speaks to graduating students at Alabama amid protests
    Business Standard
President Donald Trump was addressing graduating students at the University of Alabama on Thursday, a visit that drew hundreds of protesters to an off-campus rally. Trump's remarks in Tuscaloosa are the Republican president's first address to graduates in his second term and come as he has been celebrating the first 100 days of his administration. The previously scheduled visit came shortly after he announced a shake-up to his national security team, with Mike Waltz being tapped for United Nations ambassador and Secretary of State Marco Rubio taking over Waltz's national security adviser role on an interim basis. What a nice looking group this is, Trump said to open his speech. There's nowhere I'd rather be than Tuscaloosa. Alabama, where Trump won a commanding 64 per cent of the vote in 2024, is where he has staged a number of his trademark large rallies over the past decade. It is also where Trump showed early signs of strength in his first presidential campaign when he began...
