Telcos boost vigilance, network readiness to ensure seamless connectivity
    Business Standard
Amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, Indian telecom operators have taken immediate measures to ensure uninterrupted connectivity, including intra-circle roaming arrangements and setting up of control centres for constant vigil, as well as diesel stock-up for telecom towers. The telecom department held a meeting with operators earlier this week, and asked telcos to establish national-level control centres and ensure network continuity and close coordination at all times. Sources said the meeting took place on May 7, and all telcos offered their full commitment to the government in immediately activating measures including round-the-clock monitoring of networks, in light of the prevailing situation. The telecom department on the same day issued an office memo detailing the measures. Telcos were asked to share details of their nodal officers in charge of control centres, and ensure roaming arrangements work smoothly so customers have 24/7 connectivity. They were also .

Govt issues Letter of Intent to Starlink for satellite internet rollout
    Business Standard
The government has issued Letter of Intent to Starlink for satcom services, sources said on Wednesday. Starlink is a satellite internet service developed by SpaceX -- the American aerospace manufacturer and space transportation company founded in 2002 by world's richest man Elon Musk. It provides high-speed, low-latency broadband internet worldwide using satellite technology. Sources told PTI that the Department of Telecom (DoT) has now issued Letter of Intent to Starlink. Prior to this, the government had issued licences to Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications. Unlike conventional satellite services that rely on distant geostationary satellites, Starlink utilises the world's largest low earth orbit or LEO constellation (550 km above earth). This constellation of LEO satellites (7,000 now but eventually set to grow to over 40,000) and its mesh delivers broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, and video calls.

Starlink approval in final phase, to serve remote areas: MoS Telecom
    Business Standard
Granting approval to Elon Musk-led satellite internet provider Starlink is a complicated issue but it is in the final stages, Union Minister Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said on Tuesday while allaying apprehensions of any threat to existing telecom service providers. While speaking with reporters on the sidelines of the Bharat Telecom event, the Minister of State for Telecom said that the government's security norms for satcom are important, especially in the present scenario where hostile nation Pakistan is making an attempt to hack the country's system. "It is a little complicated issue (permit for Starlink). We have to look from multiple angles. Security is one of them. Definitely, since it is in the final stages, we will get back on that," the minister said. He said that Starlink will have a minuscule role in connectivity compared to traditional telecom networks. "Starlink or the others, I wanted you to understand that in the entire world the number of subscribers Starlink has is l

Govt mandates lawful interception of satcom, bars data flow overseas
    Business Standard
The Department of Telecom on Monday issued stringent security norms mandating legal interception of satellite communication services and barred companies from linking connection of users in any form with any terminal or facility located outside the country's border as well as processing of their data overseas. The security rules also mandate service providers to indigenise at least 20 per cent of their ground segment of the satellite network within years of their establishment in the country. The move assumes significance as the government is, for the first time, gearing up to open satellite communication service for the general public and needs to put measures in place to avoid any misuse of the services by criminal elements, especially terrorists. Key players like Elon Musk-led Starlink, Bharti Group-backed OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications are in fray to provide satcom services in India. According to the instruction, the satcom service licence holder will require security
