Environment, carbon emission neglected in sustainable development: Study

Environment, carbon emission, biodiversity and malnutrition are among the issues that remain neglected by certain groups of countries, according to a recent study that analysed the trajectories of 166 nations towards attaining sustainable development. In 2015, member states of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Aimed at achieving human progress, economic prosperity, and planetary health, the framework outlines 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), including no poverty, zero hunger, quality education and gender equality. Questions, however, remain as to how different nations navigate their own paths toward these goals, said an international team of researchers from different countries, including Australia, China and Israel. Most Gen Z voters in Delhi aware of candidates, rely on social media: Study

Most GenZ voters in Delhi are aware of candidates in their constituencies, and women safety, unemployment and pollution are the main pressing issues for them, a study has found. Around 74 per cent of respondents believe that freebies matter and influence votes around the elections, according to the study that was conducted to find how Delhi's youth engages with democracy. "Seven in 10 GenZers turn up to vote consistently, with 71 per cent having participated in past elections. 88 per cent are aware of the candidates from their constituency," the study report said, adding that Delhi's young voters, aged 18-26 years, are aware, active and engaged around state polls. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Sunday said India is committed to conserving and enriching nature, as reflected in the steady increase in Ramsar sites -- wetlands of international importance -- across the country. On the occasion of World Wetlands Day, Yadav credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on wetland conservation for India's record 89 Ramsar sites, the highest in Asia and the third highest in the world. "With a consistent rise in Ramsar sites, India is showing the commitment to both conserve and enrich nature. China's mega hydropower project threatens water security: Arunachal CM

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday expressed concern that the neighbouring China's plan to construct the world's largest hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo river will have a devastating effect on the state and Assam. The Yarlung Tsangpo river enters Arunachal Pradesh as Siang and becomes the Brahmaputra in Assam before flowing into Bangladesh. Speaking at the inaugural function of a seminar titled Environment and Security' here, Khandu pointed out that the dam would allow China to control the timing and volume of water flowing downstream, which could have devastating effects during periods of low flow or drought.
