Hegseth increases US warship presence in West Asia with 2 aircraft carriers
    Business Standard
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, in a rare move, is beefing up the Navy warship presence in the Middle East, ordering two aircraft carriers to be there next month as the US increases strikes on the Yemen-based Houthi rebels, according to a US official. It will be the second time in six months that the US has kept two carrier strike groups in that region, with generally only one there. Prior to that it had been years since the US had committed that much warship power to the Middle East. According to the official, Hegseth signed orders on Thursday to keep the USS Harry S Truman in the Middle East for at least an additional month. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing military operations. The ship has been conducting operations in the Red Sea against the Houthis and was scheduled to begin heading home to Norfolk, Virginia, at the end of March. And Hegseth has ordered the USS Carl Vinson, which has been operating in the Pacific, to begin steaming toward the

Need to scale up applications of space tech to drive growth: ex-Isro chief
    Business Standard
India's space sector is on the cusp of a significant transformation but there is a need to scale up commercial applications of space technology to drive economic growth, former ISRO chairperson S Somnath said on Thursday. Speaking at a conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) highlighted the shift required to unlock the full potential of space technology. Somnath highlighted that while India has made remarkable strides in space technology, its application has largely been confined to government programs. The application of space technology has been focused on societal and governmental programs. Now, bringing it into the commercial domain and monetising it is key, he said. He pointed out that the penetration of space applications in India remains limited, with only about 10 per cent of the potential market being explored. India is a huge country with 145 crore people, but the application

China conducts military drill near Taiwan; 43 of 59 ships, drones cross ADZ
    Business Standard
An unusually large number of Chinese military ships, planes and drones entered airspace and waters surrounding Taiwan between Sunday and Monday, the self-governing island republic's Defence Ministry said. China said the drills were a response to recent statements and actions by the US and Taiwan. The ministry on Tuesday published on its social media several images of Chinese drones and ships and said 43 out of 59 of them entered Taiwan's air defence identification zone but that no confrontations were reported. Taiwan monitored the situation and deployed aircraft, navy ships and coastal anti-ship missile defences in response, the ministry said. China launches such missions on a daily basis in hopes of wearing down Taiwanese defences and morale, although the vast majority of the island's 23 million people reject Beijing's claim of sovereignty over Taiwan and its threat to use force to assert its control. It's unclear what prompted the large Chinese deployment. Daily figures often va
