Senate advances Trump's tax, spending bill after late-night drama
    Business Standard
Capping a tumultuous night, the Republican-controlled Senate advanced President Donald Trump's package of tax breaks, spending cuts and increased deportation money, with more weekend work ahead as Congress races to meet his Fourth of July deadline for passage. By a 51-49 tally and with Vice President JD Vance at the Capitol to break a potential tie, the Senate cleared a key procedural step Saturday as midnight approached. Voting had come to a standstill, dragging for more than three hours, with holdout senators huddling for negotiations and taking private meetings off the Senate floor. In the end, two Republicans opposed the motion to move ahead on Trump's signature domestic policy plan, joining all 47 Democrats. Tonight we saw a GREAT VICTORY in the Senate, Trump said in a social media post afterward. Republicans are using their majorities in Congress to push aside Democratic opposition, but they have run into a series of political and policy setbacks. Not all GOP lawmakers are on

Polling underway in 3,894 Gujarat gram panchayats under new OBC quota
    Business Standard
As many as 3,894 gram panchayats went to polls in Gujarat on Sunday in the first such exercise after the state government announced 27 per cent reservation for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the local bodies elections in 2023. The State Election Commission (SEC) said 81 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise to elect 3,656 sarpanchs and 16,224 panchayat members. People queued up in large numbers in rural Gujarat to cast their votes using ballot papers across 10,479 polling stations. Polling has been largely peaceful, with a few incidents of violence, and people turned up to vote despite the rains in parts of the state. In a village in Banaskantha district, a 95-year-old woman arrived to exercise her franchise with her grandson amid heavy rains. Police personnel assisted the elderly and differently-abled voters. Kheda MLA Arjunsinh Chauhan and former Tharad MLA Gujlabsinh Rajput were among the early voters. "Panchayat is an important pillar of democracy, so th

Polls can't take place without govt's support: B'desh election body chief
    Business Standard
The government plays a central role in the election process, the head of Bangladesh's Election Commission said on Saturday, asserting that holding polls is "not possible" without its support. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin said that no matter "how independent" the top election body is said to be, "it is not possible to hold an election without the government's support." "We have to conduct the polls with the cooperation of the government," the Dhaka Tribune newspaper quoted him as saying. He added that the commission requires assistance from law enforcement agencies, the administration, and its officials to conduct the election. Nasir Uddin made the remarks after inaugurating a training programme in the capital. In response to a question, he said while there is no constant communication between the election commission and the government, contact is being maintained both "formally and informally". There are various channels of communication, and we are involved in man

EC to go for full webcasting of polling stations for surveillance
    Business Standard
Seeking to ensure increased monitoring of the poll procedure on voting days, the Election Commission (EC) on Monday decided to carry out webcasting at all polling stations, up from the present 50 per cent. The webcasting data will be for internal consumption of the poll authority. Bihar assembly elections are due later this year and it will be the first state where 100 per cent webcasting will be implemented. In a communication to all state chief electoral officers, the poll panel said webcasting will be done in areas with internet connectivity. "However, in shadow areas, suitable alternate arrangements of videography, photography, etc. may be made," it said. So far, webcasting was done in 50 per cent of the polling stations and in "critical polling stations" to ensure that the polling process is not vitiated. In December last year, the government tweaked an election rule to prevent public inspection of certain electronic documents such as CCTV camera and webcasting footage as we
