Wimbledon 2025: Alcaraz gets past 733rd-ranked Tarvet in straight sets
    Business Standard
For one game at least, it looked like Carlos Alcaraz could be in for another surprisingly tough encounter on Wimbledon's Centre Court. But after saving three break points in his opening service game against 733rd-ranked Ollie Tarvet, things got a bit more comfortable for the defending champion, who saw out a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 second-round win over the unheralded collegiate player from Britain. While he had to face another eight break points along the way saving all but two it was a considerably smoother win than his 4 hour, five-set victory over Fabio Fognini in the opening round. Still, Alcaraz couldn't help but be impressed with the University of San Diego student playing in his first Grand Slam tournament. I just love his game to be honest, Alcaraz said. I knew at the beginning that I had to be really focused and try to play my best tennis. Alcaraz took his overall winning streak to 20 matches. After a slew of seeded players went out in the first round, he joined women's No. 1 A

Trump's immigration crackdown put LA under siege against law, says lawsuit
    Business Standard
A federal lawsuit filed Wednesday accuses President Donald Trump's administration of systematically targeting brown-skinned people in Southern California during an ongoing immigration crackdown that has put the region under siege. The court filing in US District Court alleges that federal agents have violently and indiscriminately arrested people without probable cause while carrying out immigration raids flooding street corners, bus stops, parking lots, agricultural sites, day labourer corners. The lawsuit asks the court to block the Trump administration's ongoing pattern and practice of flouting the Constitution and federal law during actions in and around Los Angeles. "These guys are popping up, rampant all over the city, just taking people randomly and we want that particular practice to end, Mohammad Tajsar, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, told the Los Angeles Times. In addition, the complaint claims that those arrested are held in .

Wimbledon 2025: Mpetshi Perricard fires record 153 mph serve vs Fritz
    Business Standard
Fifth-seeded Taylor Fritz's match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard who hit a tournament-record 153 mph serve in Wimbledon's first round was suspended after four sets on Monday night in case they wouldn't be able to finish before the tournament's 11 p.m. curfew. They'll resume on Tuesday. Mpetshi Perricard, whose speediest serve came in the opening game, took the initial two sets 7-6 (6), 7-6 (8), before Fritz grabbed the next two 6-4, 7-6 (6). The 6-foot-8 Mpetshi Perricard bettered the previous Wimbledon mark of 148 mph, by Taylor Dent in 2010. Fritz, though, not only managed to put his return in play, but also eventually won the point. Playing with the No. 1 Court retractable roof closed and artificial lights on, Mpetshi Perricard was two points from winning while leading 5-2 in the fourth-set tiebreaker, but never got closer. From 6-all, 2024 U.S. Open runner-up Fritz took the next two points to force a fifth set and pounded his right fist on his chest, yelling, Let's...

Conflict of interest in CEC may affect FCAA cases: Retired officers to CJI
    Business Standard
A group of 60 former civil servants has written to the Chief Justice of India, claiming that a "conflict of interest" in the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) could compromise the outcome of cases challenging the Forest Conservation Amendment Act, 2023. In their open letter dated June 30, the signatories, including former secretaries, ambassadors, police chiefs and forest officers, said the four-member CEC currently includes three former Indian Forest Service officers and a retired scientist who also worked with the environment ministry for many years. There are no independent experts on the panel. The letter said two CEC members recently retired as Director General of Forests and Special Secretary in the environment ministry. "A CEC comprising officers who had held the highest positions in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and were closely involved in policy-making, can hardly be expected to give independent advice to the Supreme Court,
