HM Shah to inaugurate new terminal at Indo-Bangla border crossing on Sunday

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the newly- constructed passenger terminal and a cargo gate named as 'Maitri Dwar' at the India-Bangladesh land border crossing in West Bengal on Sunday. The crossing at Petrapole is the largest land port in South Asia and is a vital gateway for trade and commerce between India and Bangladesh. The union home minister will inaugurate the passenger terminal building and 'Maitri Dwar' at land port Petrapole in West Bengal on Sunday, an official statement said. Petrapole (India)-Benapole (Bangladesh) is one of the most important land border crossings for India-Bangladesh both in terms of trade and passengers movement. Nearly 70 per cent of land-based trade (by value) between India and Bangladesh takes place through this land port which is under the administrative control of the Land Ports Authority of India, a wing of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Number of MBBS seats in UP doubled, 17 new medical colleges opened: CM Yogi

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said medical education in the state is being strengthened as the number of MBBS seats have doubled and 17 new medical colleges have been opened this year. He emphasised the remarkable transformation in healthcare in Uttar Pradesh, recalling how the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur, which was once called an bimaar' (ill) state, today gives a healthy competition to the prestigious AIIMS Gorakhpur. Addressing a gathering during the inauguration programme of KMC Medical College (PPP) in Maharajganj district, he mentioned that when he took charge of the office in 2017, the state lacked sufficient funds even for salaries, yet through teamwork and collective support, significant progress has been achieved. Ports ministry takes precautionary measures as Cyclone Dana approaches

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) on Thursday said it has initiated comprehensive safety measures to safeguard ports, vessels, and personnel in response to cyclone Dana. Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways Shantanu Thakur, chaired a detailed review meeting to assess the preparedness of the Ministry, the Directorate General of Shipping, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Thakur praised the proactive measures taken by the concerned agencies and urged them to stay vigilant in monitoring the situation as the cyclone intensifies, according to an official statement. The cyclone, currently centered over the East-central Bay of Bengal, is expected to intensify and make landfall between Odisha and West Bengal on the night of October 24, with wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, gusting up to 120 kmph. Cargo volume at 12 major ports rises 5% to 413.74 MMT in Sep: Govt

Cargo volume handled by 12 major ports rose by 5.03 per cent to 413.747 million metric tonnes (MMT) in September, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said on Thursday. In its monthly summary for September 2024, the ministry said the 20th Maritime States Development Council (MSDC) meeting held last month, discussed the implementation of a State Ranking Framework and a Port Ranking System to foster healthy competition and drive performance improvements across India's maritime sector. During the meeting, more than 100 issues from various states were deliberated and successfully resolved. According to the ministry, several new and emerging challenges were also addressed, including the establishment of Places of Refuge (PoR) for ships in distress and the development of Radioactive Detection Equipment (RDE) infrastructure at ports to enhance security. It said the transportation of cargo on National Waterways has reached 56.57 MMT for the April-August 2024 period, registering 4.
