Google settles Android TV case with CCI, pays Rs 20.24 cr settlement amount
    Business Standard
Google has settled with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) a case related to alleged unfair business practices in the Android TV segment and paid a settlement amount of Rs 20.24 crore to the regulator. This is the first case to be settled under the amended Competition Act, wherein settlement and commitment provisions were introduced in 2023. After receiving a complaint, CCI had ordered a detailed probe in 2021. Later, Google proposed to settle the case and CCI considered the settlement proposal and observed that under the "New India Agreement", Google will provide a standalone license for the Play Store and Play Services for Android smart TVs in India, thereby, removing the requirement to bundle these services or impose default placement conditions, a release said on Monday. "Additionally, by waiving the need for valid Android Compatibility Commitments (ACC) for devices shipped into India that do not include Google apps, OEMs can now sell and develop incompatible Android...

Instagram tries using AI to identify teens pretending to be adults
    Business Standard
Instagram is beginning to test the use of artificial intelligence to determine if kids are lying about their ages on the app, parent company Meta Platforms said on Monday. Meta has been using AI to determine people's ages for some time, the company said, but photo and video-sharing app will now proactively look for teen accounts it suspects belong to teenagers even if they entered an inaccurate birthdate when they signed up. If it is determined that a user is misrepresenting their age, the account will automatically become a teen account, which has more restrictions than an adult account. Teen accounts are private by default. Private messages are restricted so teens can only receive them from people they follow or are already connected to. Sensitive content, such as videos of people fighting or those promoting cosmetic procedures, will be limited, Meta said. Teens will also get notifications if they are on Instagram for more than 60 minutes and a sleep mode will be enabled that turn

Brace yourself, market is likely to get even shakier: Mark Mobius
    Economic Times
To export, companies must be able to import machinery and other components and, right now, that is very difficult because of the bureaucracy involved in setting up businesses in India. So, this is an urgent requirement for India to address. If they ease the system, it will encourage global players like Apple to set up their own factories and manufacture in India.

I am still waiting on some remuneration from PCB: Jason Gillespie
    Business Standard
Forme Pakistan red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie has claimed that he is still waiting on some remuneration from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). On his Instagram account, Gillespie posted a story which was related to his interview with Pakistan media, saying that the PCB still had to clear some of his remunerations. Gillespie and South African Gary Kirsten were appointed the red ball and white ball head coaches respectively in April 2024 on two-year contracts by the PCB. The PCB promised a new era for the Pakistan team but six months down the line both were forced to resign after the Board pulled away much of the authority given to them, including being on the national selection committee. This is the first time either of them have spoken publicly on financial matters with the PCB. "I am still waiting on some remuneration from the PCB," read one story while in another he wrote, "Gary Kirsten and I got sold the dream of building a team. Losing a game, and all of a sudden, that g

Row over Anurag Kashyap's Brahmin remark, family receives threats
    Business Standard
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who has courted a major controversy over a comment on the Brahmin community, has claimed that his family and friends are receiving death and rape threats. Kashyap had made the intemperate comment on the community in a reply to a social media user. On Friday evening, the 52-year-old filmmaker posted a statement on Instagram, saying his comment has been "taken out of context". "This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends, and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar," Kashyap said. "I won't take back what I said. Abuse me all you want. My family didn't say anything. If you want an apology, here it is," he added. In another post on his Instagram Stories, Kashyap shared a screenshot of the controversial comment. "Everyone has read the response and they're all outraged as well. At least look at the context before

Govt issues alert about online frauds targeting Char Dham pilgrims
    Business Standard
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, has alerted the public about online booking frauds, especially those targeting Char Dham pilgrims and tourists, across the country. These frauds are being perpetrated through fake websites, deceptive social media pages, Facebook posts, and paid advertisements on search engines such as Google, the home ministry said in a statement. The scams involve the creation of professional-looking but fake websites and social media profiles and WhatsApp accounts offering various services. These include helicopter bookings for Kedarnath, guest house and hotel bookings for Char Dham pilgrims, online cab or taxi reservation, holiday packages and religious tours, according to the statement. Unsuspecting individuals, upon making payments through these portals, often realise they have been duped when no confirmation or service is received and the contact numbers become unreachable.
