    Indian Energy Exchange electricity trade volumes up 4% at 9,642 MUs in Oct

    Indian Energy Exchange's (IEX) total trade volume rose 4 per cent year-on-year to 9,642 million units (MU) in October this year. During the month, the exchange-traded 4.44 lakh renewable energy certificates (RECs), recording a 105 per cent year-on-year increase. It has achieved electricity traded volume of 9,642 million units (MU) in October 2024, marking a 4 per cent year-on-year increase, IEX said in a statement. A total of 4.44 lakh RECs were traded in the trading sessions held on October 9 and 30 at a clearing price of Rs 110/REC and Rs 120/REC, respectively. The Day-Ahead Market (DAM) volume declined 7 per cent to 4,388 MU in October from 4,742 MU volume in the same month last year. The Real-Time Electricity Market (RTM) achieved a monthly volume of 3,123 MU in October 2024 compared to 2,402 MU a year ago, a rise of 30 per cent.     Sri Lanka's new govt reverses key economic reform for IMF bailout package

    The new National People's Power (NPP) government in Sri Lanka on Tuesday announced its first reversal of a key element in the ongoing IMF bailout programme concerning the loss-making state-owned enterprises. The government reversed the Electricity Act, approved in June this year under then-president Ranil Wickremesinghe's government, introducing major reforms to the state power entity Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). The Marxist NPP trade unions had then agitated against the bill. A CEB trade union leader who led the agitation is an NPP candidate in the parliamentary election scheduled for November 14. A CEB statement on Monday said the entity's privatisation programme would be scrapped and vowed to amend the CEB Reforms Act of 2024. It said there would be no privatisation of state-owned power plants, transmission and distribution processes.     Subsidies to oil & gas sector reduce 85% to $3.5 bn in 10 years: MNRE

    Subsidies to the oil & gas sector saw a reduction of 85 per cent from a peak of USD 25 billion in 2013 to USD 3.5 billion by 2023, according to an official note on Monday. Since 2010, India has steadily reformed its fossil fuel subsidies, adopting a "remove, target, and shift" approach, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said. The ministry said, as per a report of Asian Development Bank (ADB), structured approach, including adjusting retail prices, tax rates, and subsidies on select petroleum products collectively reduced fiscal subsidies in the oil and gas sector by 85 per cent from a peak of USD 25 billion in 2013 to USD 3.5 billion by 2023. "A significant step in this journey was the gradual phasing out of petrol and diesel subsidies, coupled with incremental tax hikes.
