Indian Bank eyes recovery of Rs 7,000 cr this financial year: MD & CEO
    Business Standard
Public sector Indian Bank has targeted to recover about Rs 7,000 crore during the current financial year, a top official said on Tuesday. The bank has also received the approval from the Reserve Bank of India and shareholders to raise Rs 5,000 crore which would be decided at an opportune time, the bank's Managing Director and CEO Shanti Lal Jain said here. The city-headquartered Indian Bank has reported a 41 per cent jump in its net profit to Rs 2,403 crore for the April-June 2024 quarter due to a decline in bad loans. It had earned a net profit of Rs 1,709 crore in the corresponding quarter of last year. "Last time, we recovered about Rs 8,700-Rs 8,800 crore. But what happens is slowly, this number may come down and this time we have planned that we will be making a recovery of around Rs 7,000 crore," Jain told reporters. Elaborating, he said recovery of Rs 7,000 crore for a financial year comes to Rs 1,750 per quarter and the bank in April-June 2024 quarter recovered Rs 1,937 cro

Govt puts privatisation of Container Corporation of India on backburner
    Business Standard
The government has put the privatisation of Container Corporation of India Ltd (Concor) on the backburner, an official said. In November 2019, the Union Cabinet approved the strategic sale of a 30.8 per cent stake, along with management control, in Concor -- a Navratna PSU under the Railways Ministry. The government currently holds 54.80 per cent of Concor. "The government is unlikely to push Concor's strategic sale. There are some concerns from Railways Ministry as also investors," the official said. The official further said that with the government holding in the company at 54.80 per cent, there is little scope for coming out with an offer for sale (OFS) in Concor. Although the Cabinet approval for the Concor sale was accorded in 2019, no worthwhile progress has so far been made, and even an Expression of Interest (EOI) has not been invited for the strategic sale. Shares of Concor closed at Rs 1,043.25 apiece, up 0.35 per cent over the previous close on the BSE.

Shutting down vaccine PSUs will erode capabilities further, says Congress
    Business Standard
The Congress on Friday hit out at the government over the Bharat Immunologicals and Biologicals Corporation Limited (BIBCOL) reportedly facing a "grim future", and said shutting down vaccine PSUs will only erode the country's capabilities further. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared on X a media report which claimed that the BIBCOL factory in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr, that was at the forefront of India's fight against polio before, hasn't produced a single vaccine since December 2022. "Bharat Immunologicals and Biologicals Corporation (BIBCOL) was set up in the late 1980s, at the personal initiative of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, to make India self-sufficient in the production of oral polio vaccines. It was my good fortune to have been associated with its establishment at Bulandshahr in UP as part of the technology mission on immunisation," Ramesh said in a post on X. But BIBCOL now faces a "grim future in the era of the non-biological PM", h
