Market closes higher, led by gains in fertilizer and telecom stocks

Nifty 50 closed at 24,334.55 (115.5, 0.5%), BSE Sensex closed at 77,656.09 (287.0, 0.4%), while the broader Nifty 500 closed at 23,611.60 (99.9, 0.4%). Market breadth is in the red. Of the 2,807 stocks traded today, 1,239 showed gains, and 1,513 showed losses.

Indian indices closed higher, led by gains in fertilizer and telecom stocks. The Indian volatility index, Nifty VIX, fell 3.4% and closed at 11.1 points. Fertilizer stocks such as Fertilizers & Chemicals Travancore, Paradeep Phosphates and Rashtriya Chemicals surged up to 13% after Russian President Vladimir Putin assured India of continued fertilizer supplies amid the West Asia conflict.

Nifty Midcap 100 closed higher, while Nifty Smallcap 100 closed flat. Nifty India Internet and BSE Hospitals were among the top index gainers today. According to Trendlyne’s Sector dashboard, Fertilizers emerged as the best-performing sector of the day, with a rise of 3.9%.

Asian indices closed mixed, while European indices are trading higher. US index futures traded higher, indicating a positive start to the trading session. The US announced fresh sanctions on Monday targeting Iran’s economic lifelines, potentially affecting trade partners including China. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that countries continuing to trade with Iran could lose access to the dollar-based financial system. Meanwhile, Iran vowed to retaliate and said major trading partners would resist US pressure.

  • Money Flow Index (MFI) indicates that stocks like Welspun Corp, Lenskart Solutions and IIFL Finance are in the overbought zone.

  • Fertilizer stocks like Fertilizers & Chemicals Travancore, Paradeep Phosphates and Rashtriya Chemicals soar up to 13% as Russian President Vladimir Putin assures supplies of fertilizers amid the West Asia conflict.

  • Astra Microwave Products is rising as Antique Stock Broking initiates coverage with a 'Buy' call and a target price of Rs 2,000 per share. This indicates a potential upside of 17.2%. The brokerage believes that the company is well-positioned to benefit from rising demand for air-defence and electronic warfare systems as India steps up defence modernisation and indigenisation. It expects the firm to deliver a net profit CAGR of 35% over FY27-29.

  • IndiaBulls enters an agreement to develop a residential project in Dwarka, Gurugram, with a gross development value (GDV) of Rs 3,700 crore.

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approves the transfer of DRDO missile technologies to India’s private defence industry. The move is expected to be negative for Bharat Dynamics due to increased competition and margin pressure, while benefiting players such as BEL through private-sector tie-ups.
  • Federal Bank is falling on reports that it is in advanced talks to acquire a controlling stake in Jana Small Finance Bank. The bank said it is not considering any transaction related to the reported acquisition that would require disclosure.

  • Biocon is rising as its subsidiary, Biocon Biologics, receives approval from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) for its pegfilgrastim injection. The drug is a biosimilar of Neulasta and is used to treat low white blood cell counts, with an estimated market size of $210.3 million in 2026.

  • Nitco is rising sharply as the company and its subsidiary, Nitco Realties, sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with HOABL Impactum Land to jointly develop land in Alibaug, with a revenue potential of about Rs 1,400 crore.

  • DIPAM Secretary Arunish Chawla says the government will continue market offerings to support fiscal needs, subsidy costs and capex. However, he indicates that Hindustan Copper’s OFS could be its last such offering. The government has raised Rs 54,500 crore through stake sales in nine listed PSUs in early FY27, against its Rs 80,000 crore annual target, with the latest Hindustan Copper OFS expected to raise up to Rs 3,000 crore.

  • Entero Healthcare Solutions soars to its 52-week high of Rs 1,663 as 3P India Equity Fund buys 10.9 lakh shares for Rs 150 crore through a block deal at an average price of Rs 1,377.8 per share. Prasid Uno Family Trust sells the shares.

  • SVF II Lightbulb, a SoftBank Group affiliate, sells 4.5 crore shares (~2.6% stake) in Lenskart Solutions for Rs 2,887.9 crore at an average price of Rs 641.8 per share. Goldman Sachs, SBI Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund and Morgan Stanley, among others, pick up the shares.

  • Shankesh Jewellers' shares debut on the bourses at an 11% premium to the issue price of Rs 93. The Rs 367 crore IPO received bids for 2.8 times the shares on offer.

  • Hindustan Zinc declines as the Hindustan Copper OFS raises expectations of a potential government stake sale in the zinc producer. Weak silver prices also weigh on sentiment. The government is reportedly considering selling around 1.5% in Hindustan Zinc, which could fetch roughly Rs 3,500–4,000 crore at current market levels, depending on the final offer size and pricing.

  • IIFL Finance is falling as its home finance arm receives a Rs 963.4 crore tax demand from the Income Tax Department. The unit is contesting the demand and says it does not expect a material impact on its finances or operations.

  • Sunshine Pictures' shares debut on the bourses at a 10% premium to the issue price of Rs 360. The Rs 282 crore IPO received bids for 105.8 times the shares on offer.

  • HEG Chairman, Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ravi Jhunjhunwala tenders his resignation, effective September 1. The company's board of directors appoints Riju Jhunjhunwala as the Chairman, MD and CEO for five years. Separately, the company gets National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) nod to demerge the graphite business from itself and to merge Bhilwara Energy with itself.

  • NU Vista, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nuvoco Vistas Corporation, receives a Rs 15.4 crore notice from the Joint Commissioner, CGST, Durgapur Audit Commissionerate, West Bengal, alleging irregularities in input tax credit. The notice covers FY21–FY24 and proposes denial of credits related to civil construction and canteen expenses, along with output tax credit reduction on sales returns. The company says it has sufficient evidence and expects no material financial impact.

  • Tata Consultancy Services' Dutch arm approves acquiring Porsche's subsidiary, MHP Management, for €320 million (~Rs 3,571.1 crore) as part of the partnership between the company and Porsche to drive AI transformation. Additionally, the company secures a €1.3 billion (Rs 13,950 crore) order from Porsche to industrialise AI across Porsche’s engineering, manufacturing, operations, customer experience and enterprise transformation.

  • Afcons Infrastructure is rising as it wins a dispute with the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority. A panel has ruled in Afcons’ favour and awarded it Rs 335.5 crore.

  • Brigade Hotel Ventures surges as its board of directors appoints Vinay Gupta as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective August 17.

  • Jefferies maintains a 'Buy' rating on UPL with a target price of Rs 715. The brokerage remains positive on UPL’s growth outlook, margin improvement efforts and upcoming value-unlocking triggers. Management remains confident of achieving its FY27 growth guidance of 10–14%, with Q2 performance broadly in line with internal expectations.

  • Hindustan Copper is falling sharply as its promoter, the Government of India, plans to sell up to a 6% stake in the company at a floor price of Rs 514 per share.

  • Ceigall India is rising as it wins a Rs 704.7 crore order from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways for a road project in Arunachal Pradesh. It will execute the project with Sushee Infra & Mining, with Ceigall holding a 74% stake in the partnership.

  • Ratnamani Metals & Tubes surges as its subsidiary receives export orders worth Rs 2,700 crore. The unit will supply spools and hangers to overseas customers over the next 2–3 years.

  • SEBI drops proceedings against Max Financial Services (MFSL), Max Life, Axis Bank and other entities in a case related to Max Life share transactions. SEBI had alleged that the arrangements provided undue benefits of Rs 3,911.95 crore to Axis entities at the expense of MFSL and its shareholders, along with inadequate and delayed disclosures by MFSL.

  • Nifty 50 was trading at 24,184.05 (-35, -0.1%), BSE Sensex was trading at 77,195.45 (-173.7, -0.2%), while the broader Nifty 500 was trading at 23,486.80 (-25.0, -0.1%).

  • Market breadth is in the green. Of the 2,226 stocks traded today, 1,161 were on the uptrend, and 975 went down.

Largecap and midcap gainers today include Vodafone Idea Ltd. (15.19, 8.0%), One97 Communications Ltd. (1,718, 5.8%) and Adani Enterprises Ltd. (3,110, 3.7%).

Downers:

Largecap and midcap losers today include Federal Bank Ltd. (346.95, -3.0%), Siemens Energy India Ltd. (3,390.10, -2.7%) and Oil India Ltd. (467.50, -2.0%).

Movers and Shakers

Top high volume gainers on BSE included Vodafone Idea Ltd. (15.19, 8.0%), Cyient Ltd. (975.05, 7.3%) and Paradeep Phosphates Ltd. (159.75, 6.9%).

Top high volume losers on BSE were Hindustan Copper Ltd. (531.40, -7.5%), Federal Bank Ltd. (346.95, -3.0%) and ZF Commercial Vehicle Control Systems India Ltd. (2,600, -1.9%).

Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd. (124.22, 4.4%) was trading at 19.8 times of weekly average. Godrej Agrovet Ltd. (610.50, 6.6%) and Chalet Hotels Ltd. (895.50, 3.0%) were trading with volumes 18.7 and 8.9 times weekly average respectively on BSE at the time of posting this article.
