Market closes lower as oil trades near $89 amid US-Iran deadlock

Nifty 50 closed at 24,287.65 (-78.4, -0.3%), BSE Sensex closed at 77,728.16 (-281.1, -0.4%) while the broader Nifty 500 closed at 23,564.45 (-30.5, -0.1%). Market breadth is in the red. Of the 2,806 stocks traded today, 1,282 were on the uptick, and 1,463 were down.

Indian indices closed lower, with oil trading near $89 as the US-Iran deadlock kept investors cautious. The Indian volatility index, Nifty VIX, rose 0.4% and closed at 11.4 points. BEML closed 1.9% higher as it received a $6.7 million order from Mauritius to supply hydraulic excavators for African markets. Its international order book now stands at around $119 million.

Nifty Midcap 100 closed flat, while Nifty Smallcap 100 closed higher. Nifty Realty and BSE Realty Index were among the top index gainers today. According to Trendlyne’s Sector dashboard, Metals & Mining emerged as the best-performing sector of the day, with a rise of 1.1%.

Asian indices closed mixed, while European indices are trading lower, except for the Euro Stoxx 50 index. US index futures traded mixed. The Iran-US MoU signed in June expired today, with talks to end the war deadlocked. IRGC commander Yadollah Javani said Iran was set to shift from a defensive posture to an offensive stance under a new “maximum deterrence” policy. Meanwhile, Washington also showed little immediate indication of formally reviving or extending the collapsed agreement.

  • Money Flow Index (MFI) indicates that stocks like Cupid, Sundram Fasteners and Shilpa Medicare are in the overbought zone.

  • Sugar stocks like Dalmia Bharat Sugar, Piccadily Agro and Triveni Engineering surge up to 8% as sugar prices surge amid growing concerns over crop production.

  • Uflex surges to its 20% upper circuit as its Q1FY27 net profit soars 7.3x YoY to Rs 423.1 crore, boosted by inventory destocking and a richer product mix. Revenue jumps 37.6% to Rs 5,397.2 crore, thanks to higher sales in the packaging, packaging solutions and exports markets. It features in a screener of strong-performing, under-the-radar stocks.

  • Zaggle Prepaid Ocean Services plunges below its IPO price of Rs 164 as its Q1FY27 net profit drops 32.9% YoY to Rs 17.5 crore due to higher gift card, employee benefits, finance, depreciation & amortisation and cash back costs. However, revenue jumps 25.1% to Rs 429.9 crore, fueled by new customer additions and better corporate spending. It shows up in a screener of stocks where promoters increase pledged shares QoQ.

  • India’s average crude import price stands at $91.2 a barrel on August 14, up from around $82 in July and $83.2 in June, according to PPAC data. Analysts say sustained high oil prices could widen India’s import bill and fuel inflation, as over 85% of the country’s crude needs are met through imports. If the West Asia conflict persists, India’s crude basket could average above $90 a barrel in FY27, while global prices may stabilise at $80–85.

  • Juniper Green Energy secures an order from Solar Energy Corp of India (SECI) to set up & operate a 230 MW firm & dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE) project.

  • BSE plunges as Jefferies downgrades the stock to an ‘Underperform’ call from ‘Hold’ and cuts the target price by 16% to Rs 2,940. The brokerage expects higher securities transaction tax, tighter bank-guarantee rules and the closing auction session to pressure trading volumes and revenue from domestic proprietary traders. It also lowers its FY27–29 earnings estimates by 5–12%.

  • Schneider Electric Infrastructure plunges over 10% as its Q1FY27 net profit drops 69.8% YoY to Rs 12.4 crore due to higher input, employee benefits, finance and depreciation & amortisation costs. However, revenue grows 5.2% to Rs 658.3 crore, led by order book execution. The company shows up in a screener of stocks with decreasing returns on equity (RoE) over the past two-years.

  • SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey says the Closing Auction Session (CAS), introduced on August 3, 2026 for F&O stocks, will remain in place as a key market reform. He says SEBI is analysing expiry-day data and market feedback, with any changes to CAS being data-driven.

  • Balu Forge Industries surges as it receives a multi-month contract for 155mm artillery shells. The company will supply 10,000 shells initially, followed by monthly supplies in agreed quantities.

  • Baazar Style Retail surges to hit the upper circuit at Rs 383.5 as 45 lakh shares worth Rs 163 crore change hands at Rs 362 per share via a block deal. Cupid's Aditya Halwasiya is reportedly the likely buyer in the block deal.

  • Saatvik Green Energy is falling sharply as its Q1FY27 net profit plunges 95.4% YoY to Rs 5.5 crore due to higher finance and depreciation & amortisation costs and ongoing capacity expansion. Revenue drops 43.5% to Rs 519.7 crore, impacted by slower order execution. Separately, the company signs a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Odisha Government to set up a 3.6 GW solar cell manufacturing facility.

  • Antique Stock Broking maintains a 'Buy' rating on Bharat Dynamics (BDL) with a target price of Rs 1,597. The brokerage sees strong revenue visibility for BDL, supported by its robust order book and a healthy pipeline of major missile systems, including QR-SAM, Astra and Akash.

  • Molbio Diagnostics' shares debut on the bourses at a 21.4% premium to the issue price of Rs 807. The Rs 939.7 crore IPO received bids for 70.3 times the total shares on offer.

  • Dhoot Transmission's shares debut on the bourses at a 37.8% premium to the issue price of Rs 871. The Rs 3,066.9 crore IPO received bids for 74.2 times the total shares on offer.

  • BEML is rising as it receives a $6.7 million order from Mauritius to supply hydraulic excavators for African markets. Its international order book now stand at around $119 million.

  • Reliance Industries announces plans to partner with Rolls-Royce to develop an indigenous engine for India’s AMCA programme. PL Capital’s Amit Anwani says the tie-up could benefit India’s defence sector over the next 10–15 years by easing key supply constraints and boosting private-sector participation in defence manufacturing.

  • CESC rises as its subsidiary, Purvah Green Power, receives a Letter of Award (LOA) from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to supply 70 MW of renewable power around the clock. The agreement is for 25 years, at a tariff of Rs 5.25 per kWh.

  • WeWork India Management is rising as 1 Ariel Way Tenant sells 35 lakh shares worth Rs 244.1 crore through a bulk deal at an average price of Rs 697.6 per share. ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund, Motilal Oswal AMC and HDFC Standard Life Insurance, among others, pick up the shares.

  • Dr Reddy's Laboratories is falling as it receives a Form 483 with four observations from the US FDA after an inspection at its formulations facility in Hyderabad.

  • Barclays’ Mitul Kotecha expects the rupee to weaken to 95 per USD by end-2026 and 96.7 by mid-2027, driven by continued dollar strength. He also noted that FCNR inflows have surpassed expectations despite subdued FPI activity. In contrast, ANZ Research’s Dhiraj Nim views the rupee’s near-term weakness as temporary, supported by a low current-account deficit of 1% of GDP, and welcomed the RBI’s early closure of the FCNR(B) deposit window.

  • UPL rises as its subsidiary, Advanta Holdings, enters an agreement with Hytech USA to acquire Misr Hytech Seed International (Hytech Egypt) for $110 million (~Rs 1,051.6 crore). The acquisition will help the company expand its presence in the seed markets of the Middle East and Africa.

  • TD Power Systems is rising as its board of directors approves a Rs 600 crore fundraise through a qualified institutional placement (QIP) of equity or other securities. The company also enters an agreement with Siemens Energy to supply two-pole generators.

  • Rubicon Research surges as its Q1FY27 net profit jumps 95.8% YoY to Rs 84.8 crore, supported by lower finance costs and improved product mix. Revenue rises 51.6% to Rs 534.3 crore, driven by broad-based growth in its product portfolio and contribution from the recently acquired Arinna Lifesciences. The company also raises its FY27 operating EBITDA margin guidance to at least 23% from 22-23% earlier.

  • Voltas rises as its board of directors approves forming a joint venture (JV) with Atomberg Innovation to develop and manufacture AC compressors in India. The company's Q1FY27 net profit soars 52.2% YoY to Rs 213.8 crore, helped by a richer product mix. Revenue jumps 18.5% to Rs 4,764.7 crore, supported by strong demand for ACs during the summer.

  • Nifty 50 was trading at 24,306.05 (-60.0, -0.3%), BSE Sensex was trading at 77,892.92 (-116.3, -0.2%), while the broader Nifty 500 was trading at 23,538 (-56.9, -0.2%).

  • Market breadth is in the red. Of the 2,332 stocks traded today, 1,076 showed gains, and 1,184 showed losses.

Largecap and midcap losers today include Voltas Ltd. (1,267, -4.1%), LG Electronics India Ltd. (1,663.40, -3.8%) and Vodafone Idea Ltd. (13.71, -2.8%).
