NHPC plans 1.76-tn pumped storage units

State-run NHPC Ltd plans to invest up to INR 1.76tn ($25.8bn) to establish pumped hydropower storage capacities of 20,000-22,000 MW across India. This investment will require a capex of INR 7-8 crore per MW. NHPC has already signed agreements with Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh to set up large pumped hydro projects. The focus on pumped storage follows the government?s policy push to ensure grid stability as renewable energy capacity increases in the country. Pumped storage projects store and generate electricity by transferring water between two reservoirs at different levels.

Indian issuers raised nearly $43 billion in green bonds from January 2014 to March 2023

NHPC partners Nepalese utility to develop 480 MW Phukot hydro project

State-owned hydro power giant NHPC on Thursday inked an initial pact with Nepalese utility Vidhyut Utpadan Company for developing a 480 MW Phukot Karnali hydroelectric project. "On 1st June 2023, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been exchanged between NHPC Ltd and Vidhyut Utpadan Company Ltd (VUCL), Nepal, in august presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda' at Hyderabad House, New Delhi, for development of Phukot Karnali Hydro Electric Project (480MW) in Nepal," a company statement said. The Nepal Prime Minister is on a four-day visit to India, which began on Wednesday. The MoU was exchanged by RK Vishnoi, Chairman & Managing Director, NHPC, and VUCL Managing Director Surya Prasad Rijal. The signing of this MOU is a landmark step towards India-Nepal Joint Vision on Power Sector Cooperation.
